Barcelona to Leave Camp Nou Again Next Season After €510m Funding Approval

Barcelona will have to move out of Camp Nou next season as the club moves forward with a new €510 million funding deal for roof installation at their stadium. This means the team will return to Montjuic Olympic Stadium temporarily, postponing their final return to Camp Nou until January 2028 under updated redevelopment plans.

Temporary Move Back to Montjuic Olympic Stadium

The approval of the €510 million (£438m/$584m) financing package confirms that Barcelona must leave Camp Nou again while major roof works are carried out. Club treasurer Ferran Olive confirmed the first team’s relocation to Montjuic during this construction period. Officials anticipate the club won’t be back in their revamped home until early 2028.

Board Approves Staggered Funding to Keep Project on Track

Ongoing delays in construction forced the board to seek additional funds to continue the ambitious Espai Barca redevelopment. In a recent vote, club members approved this fresh financial injection to cover costs arising from setbacks. The club stated this capital is needed to manage the economic impact caused by these project delays.

Rising Costs Push Total Redevelopment Near €2 Billion

The club detailed how this new financing will be split into two parts to complete essential stadium infrastructure and introduce new technology. According to an official statement:

• First tranche: €300 million aimed at finishing Camp Nou, expanding the project’s scope beyond initial plans to include new facilities, services, and technological upgrades.
• Second tranche: €210 million raised through two Media Note issues of €105 million each. The first was issued in July 2026, and the second is planned for October or November 2026.

This round of borrowing pushes the overall cost of the stadium overhaul close to €2 billion (£1.7bn/$2.3bn).

Future Capacity and Major Events

Currently, Camp Nou holds around 62,000 fans, but with the reopening of the third tier, capacity will rise to 75,000 this season. By January 2028, the stadium will welcome up to 95,000 spectators, eventually reaching 105,000 for the 2028-29 season. This upgraded arena has already been chosen by UEFA to host the 2029 Champions League final, showcasing its scale to the world stage.
