Manchester City have drawn a hard line in the sand. Barcelona know exactly where it is.
The Premier League champions are ready to reject Barça’s opening offer for Rodri, despite the midfielder already shaking hands on personal terms with the Catalan club, according to SPORT. City want €65 million. Barcelona, for now, do not.
A deal agreed with the player – but not the club
Barça’s first formal proposal lands at €45 million fixed, plus €15 million in bonuses tied to performance. On paper, it nudges close to City’s valuation. In reality, the English club see it as falling short of the clear figure they have set: €65 million, not a euro less.
City’s stance is familiar. They rarely block players who want to leave, but they almost never compromise on price once it is set. At 30, with 11 months left on his contract, Rodri is no longer an untouchable future asset, yet City still believe his value must be fully respected.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are convinced they have done the hard part already. They have the player. At least in spirit.
Flick’s call that changed the landscape
The pursuit accelerated after Hansi Flick stepped in personally. The new Barça coach picked up the phone on Thursday and spoke directly with Rodri. That conversation, by all accounts, tipped the balance.
Rodri gave his “yes” to Barça’s project at Camp Nou. A clear, definitive commitment.
The timing was no coincidence. Just as Real Madrid’s interest began to cool over disagreements on the fee, Flick moved. The window that opened in Catalonia quietly closed in the capital.
SPORT report that Madrid’s offer barely reached €40 million. For a World Cup winner in his prime, Rodri’s camp saw that number as a message in itself. Not a serious push. Not a sign of real conviction.
So the player turned fully towards Barcelona. No more hedging. No more waiting for Madrid to move.
Door closed on Madrid
Rodri’s agent, Pablo Barquero, has not hidden where his client wants to go. He has already informed Real Madrid that the decision has been made and that it does not favour the Bernabeu.
Speaking to Spanish radio station El Larguero, Barquero said: “Out of respect for Madrid, as they have been class, Rodri informed them that his decision is to join Barca.”
With that, the last sliver of doubt over a possible Madrid hijack effectively vanished. The battle is no longer between two Spanish giants. It is between Barcelona’s budget and Manchester City’s valuation. Deco and the Barça board now carry the burden of making sure that gap does not reopen the door for anyone else.
Barcelona’s numbers game
Inside the Camp Nou offices, the feeling is clear: a total package of around €60 million is fair for a player running into the final year of his deal. From Barcelona’s perspective, the clock on that contract should count for something.
They have been working on a pitch to City that leans on logic as much as finance. A swift agreement, they argue, would suit everyone. City would cash in decisively on a player who wants to leave. Barça would secure their new midfield anchor without a long, public tug-of-war.
The urgency is real. Frenkie de Jong’s ongoing fitness issues, and the possibility he may need surgery for a persistent problem, have sharpened the need for a new midfield general. Flick does not want to enter the heart of the season with a patched-up core. He wants a leader in that zone. Rodri fits the description perfectly.
To make it happen, Barcelona have already started cutting deep into their wage bill. Several high earners have gone, freeing the space required to absorb both a sizeable transfer fee and a top-tier salary. This is not a speculative chase; it is a targeted move they have been preparing for.
The gap that could decide everything
And yet, the numbers still bite.
Barça’s internal ceiling for the operation currently sits around €50 million, with add-ons to push the total closer to their preferred €60 million. City are unmoved at €65 million. That €5–15 million difference now shapes one of the defining transfer stories of the summer.
Barcelona believe the player’s contract situation, his clear desire to join them, and their financial effort justify some flexibility from City. City believe Rodri’s status and importance demand full price, contract length or not.
Someone will have to blink.
For Barcelona, the stakes are obvious: land their midfield leader now, or risk dragging the saga out and inviting new rivals into the race. For City, the question is equally sharp: hold the line and keep a potentially unsettled player, or cash in at a slight discount and move on.
