Benfica Sign Duran on Big-Money Loan as Colombian Aims High
Benfica have pushed hard into the 2026-27 market and landed a statement signing up front, confirming the arrival of Duran from Al-Nassr on a season-long loan that underlines both their ambition and their belief in the Colombian’s ceiling.
This is no low-risk punt. The Lisbon club will pay €6.1 million for the loan alone, with an option to buy set at €30m at the end of the campaign. For a player still only 22, it is a clear signal: Benfica see a striker ready to explode in Europe, not just another rotation piece.
“I’m very grateful to God, just as I said when I arrived,” he said. “I’m happy! I still say that it’s the biggest club in Portugal. I’m very grateful to be here. I have very high expectations for my time here. I want to play well, give it my all, and become a champion.”
No cautious language. No talk of “settling in” or “taking it step by step.” Duran has come to win, and he is not hiding it.
He also delivered the kind of promise that supporters in the Estádio da Luz want to hear from a new No. 9: “I want to work hard and help my team.”
A fast-track career
His journey to Lisbon has been anything but gentle.
Duran first emerged at Envigado, the Colombian club that has built a reputation as a conveyor belt of attacking talent. From there, he jumped to MLS with Chicago Fire, where his blend of power and movement started to draw serious attention from European scouts.
The breakthrough came with Aston Villa, who brought him into the Premier League in January 2023. That move pushed his name into a wider spotlight, and it wasn’t long before the money followed. Al-Nassr stepped in with a deal worth €77m, a staggering fee that instantly changed the expectations around him.
The path, though, was not linear. Loan spells at Fenerbahce and Zenit followed as Al-Nassr looked for the right environment for him to grow. Now, the next chapter brings him back to Europe’s main stage with a club that has made a habit of polishing raw attacking talent and selling it at a premium.
For Benfica, that track record is part of the pitch. For Duran, it is an opportunity to prove he is more than a big transfer fee and a promising CV.
International edge
Duran does not arrive as a project without pedigree. He already carries 17 caps and three goals for Colombia, experience that sharpens a young forward’s game and mentality. International football tests decision-making, resilience, and composure. Benfica will expect all three.
