Benjamin Sesko: A New Season of Freedom at Manchester United
Benjamin Sesko walks into this season with something he hasn’t felt for a long time: freedom in his own body.
The Slovenian striker’s first year at Manchester United was split in two. On one side, 12 goals and flashes of why Europe’s biggest clubs chased him as a teenager. On the other, a stubborn shin problem that cut short his debut campaign and wrecked his pre-season.
Now, after an eye-catching return to the starting XI in the Champions League, Sesko is convinced that chapter is closed.
“It was basically just to make sure that it doesn't get worse because this was kind of a problem,” he explained of the club’s cautious handling of his recovery. “We just need a little bit longer than usual, because if you start too early, it might appear again. And I think waiting a little bit longer was a great decision, and now it's healed, so it's perfect. It was shin.”
This wasn’t a freak injury. It built up over time, the product of a heavy kick late last season layered on top of the relentless demands of Premier League football and his own physical output.
“I got a kick last season, but it was also a little bit of an overload from myself. So basically, that was it,” the 23-year-old said.
The damage arrived at the worst possible moment, just as he seemed to be settling into English football’s chaos. The stop-start rhythm that followed robbed him of a proper pre-season and left him watching on while others sharpened up. United’s medical staff chose patience over risk. Sesko, desperate to play, had to learn to live with that.
The payoff, he believes, is what supporters are starting to see now: a fully fit centre-forward, no longer managing pain, no longer worrying about the next sprint or challenge.
Off the pitch, the transformation has been just as stark. The move from Germany to England, from Leipzig to the glare of Old Trafford, hit him hard in that first year. New league, new country, new expectations. New everything.
“Way better, especially than last season,” he said when asked how he feels now. “I changed a country. Everything was new for me. Now for me it's like I'm really enjoying it. I'm really happy here. I love life here. I have teammates that are perfect. I can't really complain about anything.”
That sense of belonging has been a long time coming. United had tracked Sesko since he was a 16-year-old prodigy, convinced his blend of size, speed and technique would eventually fit the Theatre of Dreams. The transfer could have happened far earlier. It didn’t by design.
Sesko and his camp chose the long road. First Red Bull Salzburg. Then Leipzig. Then, only when he felt ready, Manchester United.
“It was just basically the moment that we decided because I think it was important,” he said. “It would be a little bit too huge of a step for me to jump from, let’s say, Austria or Slovenia directly to Manchester United. So I just needed those steps to get better and better and I’m finally here.”
Now the detours are over. The injuries, he insists, are behind him. The adaptation phase is done.
What’s left is the version of Sesko United thought they were getting all along – and a season that will show just how right they were to wait.
