Brian Fariñas: Barcelona's Rising Star Faces Key Decision

Brian Fariñas arrived at pre-season as another name on the list. He might leave it as a problem Hansi Flick didn’t expect to have.

The 19-year-old midfielder has been one of the standout stories of Barcelona’s summer work, impressing so much that Flick personally blocked a loan move to Girona before a ball had even been kicked. The idea was simple: the new coach wanted to see him up close.

Fariñas did the rest.

Flick impressed – and now faced with a decision

Once in front of the first-team staff, Fariñas quickly broke out of the “promising kid” category. He showed he could sit as a defensive midfielder, operate as a classic No. 8, and push higher between the lines. When Flick needed cover at right-back against Birmingham, he threw the youngster in there as well. Fariñas coped, and that versatility has become one of his biggest calling cards.

He has gone from filling out training numbers to convincing the manager he can actually help the senior side. That matters. At Barcelona, plenty of academy talents train with the first team; far fewer genuinely change a coach’s plans.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the club have already taken one firm stance: Fariñas will not be sent back to the reserve team. That option is off the table.

So the choice is now sharp. Either he stays with Flick’s senior squad, or Barcelona revive the already agreed move to Girona and let him leave on loan.

On merit alone, Fariñas has done enough to make the discussion real. But this is Barcelona, and squad planning rarely depends on just one player’s performances.

De Jong’s knee and a domino effect

The next step in Fariñas’ career is now tied to a completely different storyline: Frenkie de Jong’s recovery.

The Dutch midfielder is working his way back from a rupture of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, an injury suffered during the World Cup. He has opted for conservative treatment for now, though surgery remains on the table if progress stalls.

Barcelona are watching that situation closely. Every medical update on De Jong could shift the internal debate over Fariñas.

If De Jong is ruled out for a longer spell, the logic is clear. With the reserve-team path already discarded, keeping Fariñas around the first team would give Flick another flexible body in a midfield that suddenly looks lighter. In that scenario, Girona may have to wait.

If, on the other hand, De Jong’s recovery accelerates and the midfield picture stabilises, the argument for sending Fariñas to Girona grows stronger. Regular minutes in La Liga, in a team that already wanted him, could be more valuable than sporadic cameos and training sessions at the Camp Nou.

For now, the youngster sits in a strange limbo. His performances have opened the door, but his fate will not be decided purely by what he has done on the pitch, or by how much Girona like him.

It will be shaped by a scan on Frenkie de Jong’s knee and by how Barcelona choose to balance promise against immediate need in the weeks ahead.
