Brown Bears Dominate but Settle for Draw Against Rhode Island
KINGSTON, R.I. – Brown controlled almost everything but the scoreboard.
The Bears outshot Rhode Island 17–3, racked up 10 shots on frame, and earned 10 corner kicks on a cool Thursday night at the URI Soccer Complex. They left with only a 1–1 draw.
Vargas Strikes Early
The pressure came early and hard.
Brown’s front line pinned the Rams deep from the opening whistle, and the breakthrough arrived in the 12th minute. Kyra Treanor beat her defender down the right flank, slipped into the box, and whipped a low ball across the face of goal. Waiting inside the six-yard box, senior forward Angelina Vargas met it cleanly and drilled her shot into the back of the net.
It was Vargas’ third goal of the season and the sixth of her career, a finish that reflected Brown’s dominance in the opening stretch.
The chances kept flowing. Vargas tested the keeper again in the 14th minute. Joy Okonye followed with a driven effort in the 25th. One minute later, senior Corine Gregory forced another save. In the 33rd minute, sophomore Jael‑Marie Guy added to the onslaught with a shot on target.
By halftime, the numbers told the story: Brown led 11–1 in shots, 7–1 in shots on goal, and 5–2 in corners. Vargas had already piled up four shots and three on frame. Okonye chipped in three attempts, two of them on target.
The scoreline, though, stubbornly stayed at 1–0.
Rams Rally After the Break
Rhode Island hung around. That mattered.
With Brown unable to land a second blow, the Rams finally found a way back. In the 68th minute, the ball broke to Megan Steinbach inside the penalty area. She didn’t waste the opening, slotting home to level the match at 1–1 despite Brown’s territorial control.
The equalizer jolted the home side. Fifteen minutes later, the Rams came inches from stealing the night when a late effort crashed off the crossbar in the 83rd minute, briefly silencing Brown’s dominance on the stat sheet.
At the other end, Brown’s back line stayed steady. Treanor, senior Claire Silverman, junior Chesney Robinson, and junior Brooke Birtwistle all went the full 90 minutes, locking down space and limiting Rhode Island to just two shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Addison Etter was called on only once for a save, but it proved important in preserving the draw.
Late Push Falls Short
The Bears weren’t content to settle.
They pushed hard in the closing stages, pinning Rhode Island back again. Corner kicks in the 87th and 88th minutes swung into a crowded box, but the final touch never arrived. In stoppage time, Guy drove one last shot on target in the 90th minute, forcing a final save that sealed the result.
Okonye finished with game highs in shots (six) and shots on goal (four), a constant threat cutting in and driving at the Rams’ back line. Vargas closed with four shots and three on frame, while Guy added four attempts and two on target as Brown’s attack repeatedly asked questions it couldn’t quite answer with a winner.
The draw moves Brown to 4–2–1 on the season and extends its unbeaten run in Rhode Island to 4–0–1, including a perfect 4–0–0 mark at home. The Bears are now unbeaten in three straight matches (2–0–1), yet Thursday’s performance will feel like two points dropped given the control they exerted.
Next up is a different kind of test: a trip to Hofstra on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1:00 p.m., Brown’s final non-league road game of the season. With conference play looming, can the Bears turn dominance on the stat sheet into ruthless finishing where it matters most?
