Brown Men's Soccer Secures 1-0 Win Over Saint Peter's
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — For 85 minutes, Brown pushed, prodded, and circled Saint Peter’s without landing the decisive blow. Then Lorenzo Amaral stepped up and ended the debate.
With the clock ticking into the 86th minute at Stevenson-Pincince Field, Amaral buried the game’s only goal to give Brown men’s soccer a 1-0 win on Saturday night, nudging the Bears to 2-1 on the season and a perfect 2-0 at home.
It was a move that had been coming from the moment the whistle blew.
Amaral drives the attack, then finishes it
Amaral, already the focal point of Brown’s attack this fall, spent the evening tormenting the Peacocks’ back line. He finished with a game-high six shots, five of them coming in a first half that saw Brown dictate tempo but fail to crack Saint Peter’s.
The breakthrough finally arrived late, with Amaral’s second goal of the season crafted by sharp work from teammates. Carlo Brown and Alex Sauerbrei combined to set up the forward, and this time the Bears’ pressure told. The finish snapped the deadlock and rewarded a side that outshot Saint Peter’s 12-7 on the night.
Saint Peter’s had bent all game. In the 86th minute, it broke.
Kois calm in first start, defense holds firm
While Amaral chased the winner at one end, another storyline quietly unfolded at the other. In his first-ever start for Brown, goalkeeper Graham Kois needed only two saves, but he handled both and his box with authority, securing a clean sheet in his debut.
The Bears’ back line kept Saint Peter’s to just three shots in the opening 45 minutes and seven overall, limiting clear looks and allowing Brown to control possession and territory for long stretches.
By halftime, the numbers already told the story: Brown 6 shots, Saint Peter’s 3, with Amaral alone accounting for five of those Brown efforts. The scoreline didn’t budge, but the balance of play pointed one way.
Second-half surge and the decisive moment
The second half brought more of the same: Brown on the front foot, Saint Peter’s hanging on.
Midway through the half, the Bears nearly struck. Mateo Pereyra lashed a shot that forced Saint Peter’s goalkeeper Sebastian Heredia-Randen into a sharp save, pushing the ball out for a corner. From that set piece, the pressure ratcheted up another notch. James Snaith found space at the edge of the 18-yard box and drilled a shot on frame, only for Heredia-Randen to deny him again.
Each save tightened the tension. Each near-miss raised the volume in the stands.
Saint Peter’s clung to 0-0 as long as it could. But with the game tilting more steeply in Brown’s favor, Amaral finally delivered the goal the performance demanded.
Stonehill up next under the lights
Brown now turns toward its next test with momentum in hand. The Bears return to Stevenson-Pincince Field on Friday, Sept. 11, when they host Stonehill under the lights at 7 p.m.
