Bruno Fernandes Questions Michael Carrick’s Tactics After Man United’s Heavy Defeat
Michael Carrick, the head coach of Manchester United, is facing intense criticism as the club struggles through a dismal start to the 2026/27 season. Sitting 13th in the Premier League with only one win from seven league games, the Red Devils have managed just two victories across all competitions. Their recent 4-1 loss to Como added fuel to the fire, intensifying pressure on the team and coaching staff.
Bruno Fernandes Speaks Out on Tactical Decisions
Following the embarrassing defeat, Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, publicly questioned the tactical choices made by Carrick’s team. When asked about the reasons behind the poor performance, Fernandes pointed towards the decision not to press opponents man-to-man.
- Fernandes on tactics: "It's a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, but sometimes when you give too much the ball to these teams they get confidence."
- On whether Carrick got it wrong: "That's on the manager and staff to see it, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable."
Throughout this season, Manchester United has rarely employed a high-pressing style under Carrick, which Fernandes seems to challenge openly.
Carrick’s Response to Captain’s Criticism
In his post-match interview, Carrick addressed Fernandes’ remarks and defended his tactical approach. He acknowledged that the team did attempt man-to-man pressing during the second half but conceded a goal as a result.
"We actually were half pressing man-to-man in the second half and conceded a goal from that. It's a little bit on whatever system you play or tactics you play, if you don't run forward and you don't run back you ain't gonna win."
Expert Pundits Weigh In on Fernandes' Comments
Two former players turned pundits, Jamie Carragher and Joe Cole, criticized Fernandes for publicly questioning his manager's tactics.
- Joe Cole on TNT Sports: "You cannot come out and question the tactics while captain of the side. That's sacrilege. I've played for managers where I didn't agree with the tactics, but you say that to your mate or wife, not publicly. He doesn't even do it properly. If you're going to say it, be bold and say it with your chest. Instead, he’s vague and probably thinks he's being clever."
- Jamie Carragher on CBS Sports: "Last week we said Lisandro Martinez was out of order for calling out the hierarchy above him. For Bruno Fernandes to do that is a disgrace. Last season he was player of the year because Michael Carrick became manager. He wouldn't have gotten that award without Carrick."
