Lessons from a brutal season
Arsenal spent around £250m in the previous summer window, but one lesson cut through the noise: availability matters as much as ability. Robustness has become a non‑negotiable in recruitment meetings.
Christian Norgaard arrived last summer as a potential option in the middle of the pitch. On paper, he offered depth. On the pitch, Arteta simply did not trust him. Seven appearances. One league start. In a 63-game season, that is almost no contribution at all.
The knock-on effect was brutal. Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice carried a huge burden. Zubimendi, asked to cover enormous ground week after week, faded so sharply that he dropped out of the side entirely during the run-in. Rice stayed on the pitch, but at a cost.
He played more minutes than any other outfield player at the club. He then went straight into a World Cup campaign, helping England reach the semi-finals. Somewhere in all of that, a hamstring began to complain. Rest has helped, but Arsenal know they walked the line with him.
This is where Guimaraes changes the picture.

Arteta is not signing Guimaraes simply to give Rice a breather. The Brazilian is being brought in to raise the level of the entire midfield, to ensure that when the manager rotates, the quality does not sag and the team’s identity does not blur.
If Rice needs managing through a congested period, Guimaraes can step in without the rhythm of the side collapsing. If Arteta wants both on the pitch, he suddenly has the tools to shape different midfields for different nights: control in Europe, aggression in domestic battles, variety when opponents try to shut down their patterns.
This is not a depth signing. It is a power move.
A midfield built for intensity
Arteta’s training sessions are unforgiving. Intensity is the entry fee. Anyone who cannot live with that pace, mentally and physically, quickly finds themselves on the outside.
Guimaraes walks into a midfield group that now reads like a manager’s dream board: Rice, Zubimendi, captain Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino, and the gifted youngsters Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri. It is a mix of established stars, tactical flexibility and precocious talent, all jostling for minutes.
Competition will be fierce. That is precisely the point. Arsenal do not want a first XI and a supporting cast. They want 16, 17, 18 players who can start without the level dipping, so that the demands of another 60-game season do not break the same bodies again.
