Burnley Sign Defender Alleyne from Manchester City

Burnley have moved to sharpen their promotion push by bringing in highly rated 21-year-old defender Alleyne from Manchester City, after a season that showcased his potential at both Championship and European level.

The England Under-21 international spent the first half of the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Watford, where he quickly built a reputation for combative, front-foot defending. Across league matches, he finished with the second-most tackles (20) among the club’s defenders, the third-most duels won (72) and the fourth-most clearances (76) – numbers that underline why he caught the eye of recruiters looking for a defender who relishes the physical side of the division.

City recalled him midway through the season as injuries bit into Pep Guardiola’s squad. Alleyne did not just make up the numbers. He appeared seven times under Guardiola, including both legs of the EFL Cup semi-final against Newcastle United and a Champions League outing against Bodo/Glimt, valuable minutes that hardened him at the very top level.

Now comes a different kind of test. Burnley are rebuilding after relegation from the Premier League and need players who can handle both the expectation and the grind of a 46-game campaign. Alleyne arrives with exactly that brief: help steady the back line and drive the club back to the top flight.

"I'm super excited, I can't wait to get going," he told the club’s website after completing the move. "I had my first training session today and I've really enjoyed it so far, meeting the manager and my teammates.

"I first heard of the interest a couple of months ago now and I'm so glad it got done. It's a huge team, a Premier League team to be honest and I'm so buzzing to be here."

Burnley see themselves as a club temporarily out of place, a Premier League outfit operating in the Championship. Alleyne clearly agrees. Now he has to play like it.
