Caicedo Ruled Out for Leeds Clash as Chelsea Manage Injuries
Moises Caicedo will sit out Chelsea’s Carabao Cup clash with Leeds United, with Xabi Alonso refusing to gamble on the midfielder’s fitness ahead of a crucial Premier League weekend.
Caicedo has not shaken off the injury that kept him out of the defeat to Arsenal, and Alonso made it clear he will not be rushed back.
“No, not yet. Still not ready to go,” Alonso said when asked about Caicedo and fellow summer signing Marco Palestra. “Not the moment to take too early risk. So we go game by game with them and it's too early.”
Palestra, still short of full fitness, will also miss the Leeds tie as his integration into the squad continues at a slower, controlled pace.
The timeline for Caicedo is tighter and more significant. Chelsea face a Premier League test on Saturday, and there is at least a chance the Ecuadorian could feature.
“Potentially, yes,” Alonso admitted when pressed on whether Caicedo might be back for the league fixture. “But we need to wait and probably Thursday, Friday, we'll know more.”
One boost for Chelsea comes at the back. Levi Colwill, an unused substitute against Arsenal, is now ready to play and is available for selection against Leeds.
“He's okay,” Alonso confirmed. “He's okay for tomorrow.”
Not everyone is close. Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha remain sidelined and will also miss the Carabao Cup tie, with Alonso offering no firm return date.
Asked when the pair might be ready, he kept it blunt and brief: “Ask me on Friday. Ask me on Friday.”
