Calum Scanlon Set for Loan Move to Cardiff City
Calum Scanlon is edging towards the exit door at Anfield again – but only temporarily.
The 21-year-old left-back, who caught the eye on Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States, is close to sealing a loan move back to Cardiff City for the 2026/27 campaign, according to a report from Simon Jones in the Daily Mail.
From US auditions to Championship reality
With several senior Liverpool regulars granted extended breaks after the World Cup, Andoni Iraola turned to youth in America. Scanlon was one of those who seized the chance, featuring in all three friendlies against Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds and racking up just under 90 minutes across the tour.
They were only snippets, but they mattered. He looked sharp, composed, and ready for more serious work.
That work, though, is unlikely to come at Anfield this season.
Cardiff push to bring him back
Cardiff know exactly what they’re getting. Scanlon spent the second half of last season in South Wales, making eight appearances and playing his part as the Bluebirds secured promotion back to the Championship.
Brian Barry-Murphy’s side have been pushing hard to bring him back to the Welsh capital. The Daily Mail report describes Cardiff as “working hard” on the deal, with the defender drawing “numerous enquiries” from elsewhere, including a “concerted effort” from Sheffield Wednesday.
Cardiff, though, look to be in pole position. Familiar club, familiar dressing room, familiar league. For a young defender who needs rhythm more than anything, that counts.
Blocked path at Liverpool
The logic from Liverpool’s side is clear. At left-back, Scanlon sits behind Milos Kerkez and Kostas Tsimikas in the current pecking order. Barring an injury crisis, his minutes in the first team would be scarce.
A season in the Championship, with a promoted side looking upwards, offers something he simply can’t get on Merseyside right now: regular, meaningful football.
Scanlon has not played a competitive game for Liverpool’s first team since a couple of Europa League outings in late 2023. Brutal injury problems have stalled his progress over the past two years, halting the momentum that once had him marked out as one of the club’s most exciting young defenders.
Jurgen Klopp, who handed him those European appearances, once called him “fun to watch”. That line has lingered around Scanlon, a reminder of the ceiling Liverpool still believe he has if his body finally gives him a fair run.
A season that could change everything
This move, if completed, is about more than just game-time. It is about rebuilding a career that has been forced into pause far too often.
Cardiff can offer him a platform: a promoted team with energy, a manager who already trusts him, and a league that will test every part of his game. Liverpool can monitor him closely, knowing that a strong, injury-free year in the Championship would transform his standing when he returns.
For Scanlon, it is simple. Stay fit. Play often. Prove that those flashes in Europe and in pre-season were the start of something, not the high point.
If the loan goes through and the luck finally turns, this season in Cardiff might not just be a step in his development. It might be the one that decides whether he comes back to Anfield as cover – or as a genuine contender.
