Cambuur Supporters Injured by Fireworks During League Match

SC Cambuur say supporters suffered burns, hearing damage and eye injuries after Feyenoord fans hurled fireworks into home sections during Sunday’s league match at the Kooi Stadion.

The game was halted for around 10 minutes in the first half when a barrage of red flares and fireworks erupted from the away end. What began as a noisy, visual show quickly turned dangerous as some of the fireworks were launched towards areas packed with Cambuur fans.

In a statement, Cambuur confirmed that five home supporters were injured and detailed the nature of the harm: burns, damage to hearing and eye injuries. The club’s tone was blunt and uncompromising.

“It should be clear that setting off and firing fireworks is completely unacceptable and has no place in a football stadium whatsoever,” the club said.

The incident cast a shadow over a fixture that was meant to celebrate Cambuur’s return to the Eredivisie after three seasons in the Dutch second tier. Instead, the focus turned to safety, responsibility and how such scenes were allowed to unfold.

Feyenoord moved quickly to distance themselves from the behaviour of their travelling support, calling the events “unacceptable”. Head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who worked as Arne Slot’s assistant at Liverpool last season, personally apologised to Cambuur after the final whistle on behalf of the Rotterdam club.

Both sides now want answers. Cambuur have pledged to work closely with local authorities to identify and punish those responsible. Feyenoord, for their part, said they will request camera footage as they begin their own investigation.
