Carrick Aims to Maximize Bruno Fernandes Amid Contract Speculation

Michael Carrick is refusing to be dragged into the noise around Bruno Fernandes’ future – but his message is clear enough. He wants his captain at the heart of Manchester United’s season, on the pitch and in the dressing room.

Fernandes, 31, has entered the final year of his current deal. United hold an option to extend it by another 12 months, yet a £57m release clause hangs over the situation and has not gone unnoticed across Europe. Juventus and AC Milan are weighing up a move, while Galatasaray are also considering whether to trigger the clause.

Ideally, United would tie their skipper down to a fresh contract. So far, there has been no breakthrough, no announcement, no sign that negotiations are close. The uncertainty lingers.

Carrick, speaking in Maynooth on Thursday, chose not to fuel the speculation. He sidestepped questions about the contract, but there was no dodging how central he believes Fernandes will be to his plans.

“Listen, we want top players,” Carrick said. “Every good team has players that have made a major impact. That’s how it is.

“Bruno has had that for a period of time here. We want to keep pushing and want to get the best out of Bruno and the team around him.”

That influence stretches far beyond his goals, assists and touchline rants at referees. Inside the club, Fernandes has become a reference point for standards. Younger players gravitate towards him; he talks, he explains, he demands.

“He’s been so positive since I came back,” Carrick added. “As much as the performances, it’s how he has been around the group, how he leads and takes time to help others, especially the younger players. That comes into play.

“He’s in a really good place and looking forward to the season.”

The release clause gives suitors a clear route if they decide to test United’s resolve. For now, though, Carrick is treating Fernandes not as a problem to solve, but as a cornerstone to build around.
