Michael Carrick or Eddie Howe: Who Should Lead Manchester United Now?
With talks swirling about the future of Michael Carrick at Manchester United, and Eddie Howe emerging as a potential replacement, the question on many minds is who should really be in charge to steer the club forward. Paul Parker, a former Premier League champion with the Red Devils, shared his thoughts on the situation for GOAL.
Carrick’s Immediate Impact as Interim Boss
When Michael Carrick took over as caretaker manager mid-season, following the departure of Ruben Amorim and a short spell under Darren Fletcher, there was hope he could revive the team. A familiar face with a history of success at Old Trafford, Carrick started strong with a derby win against Manchester City and an away victory at Arsenal.
Two-Year Deal Signed, But Questions Remain
Carrick led United to a third-place finish last season, yet the summer transfer window offered little change. Without significant reinforcements, United have struggled this season, winning only twice in nine matches and currently enduring a five-game winless streak across all competitions.
The pressure mounts on Carrick as the club considers drastic moves. Meanwhile, ex-Bournemouth and Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, who left Newcastle in July after nearly five years, is reportedly on the club’s radar. United’s board is aware that Howe might not be available for long if they want him.
Paul Parker’s Take: Stay with Carrick
“I still think you’d stay with Carrick,” Parker said. “I’m a novice in the whole thing, but looking at Eddie Howe, after what he went through with his previous employers, does he want to step into a similar situation? He knows spending will be limited. I don’t think he’d get to bring in his own staff either.”
Parker pointed out that the current environment at United isn’t ideal for someone ambitious. The issues at the top affect everything else, including the dressing room atmosphere and overall operation.
“If you’re ambitious and manage Manchester United, winning the league would make your legacy instantly. But right now, it just doesn’t feel possible given the current setup and resources. Transfers are tricky because the club struggles to move players on. Some players seem content to stay put,” Parker added.
He feels Howe would want to pick his next job carefully, working with people who share big ambitions. At the moment, United don’t appear to be offering that. Expectations are high, but the reality doesn't match, with no serious contention for the title this or last season.
United’s Struggles Continue
The Red Devils have been stuck without a Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Off-field and on-field issues still need sorting before they can challenge seriously again. They’re already out of the Carabao Cup, sitting 13th in the league with six points from six matches, and recently lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
Disciplinary issues surfaced too, with Leny Yoro sent off and Lisandro Martinez voicing frustrations post-match. As Carrick fights to keep his job, United face a key test against Leeds United at Elland Road this Sunday.
