Carrick's Rotation Strategy for Manchester Derby after United's Win
Manchester United eased back into Champions League life with a ruthless 4-0 dismantling of Sabah on Thursday night – and Michael Carrick used the platform to quietly shape his plans for Sunday’s Manchester derby.
Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo both started in midfield at Old Trafford and helped United seize control early. Tielemans underlined his class shortly before the interval, sliding in the assist for Bruno Fernandes to make it 2-0 and tighten United’s grip on the contest.
By then, Sabah were already reeling. Benjamin Sesko had struck to add a third before the break, United heading down the tunnel with a commanding lead and the tie effectively done.
That cushion changed the night for Carrick. Tielemans, influential in the first half, did not emerge for the restart. Mason Mount took his place, with Andrey Santos also introduced as United’s head coach used the second half to spread minutes across his squad.
“It's nice as well to be able to get Andrey [Santos] and Mason [Mount] on for the second half,” Carrick told TNT Sports after what felt like a statement win on United’s Champions League return.
The changes were not about punishment or problems. They were about planning. With the derby looming, Carrick protected legs and tested options, and his bench told its own story.
Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot and Harry Maguire all stayed seated all night, unused substitutes in a game that invited rotation. That decision may echo into the weekend, a subtle pointer towards Carrick’s likely starting XI against Manchester City.
One name, though, sits firmly in the doubtful column. Luke Shaw did not even make the matchday squad after picking up a knock in the 2-2 draw at Everton last weekend. His absence was precautionary, but significant.
“It's a little bit of that [managing him],” Carrick told TNT Sports before kick-off when asked about Shaw. “He came off the other day [at Everton] with a little bit of cramp. We didn't want to take any risks really.”
No risk on Thursday, but Sunday is a different stage. With Shaw’s fitness in question and key figures kept fresh, Carrick has played his hand carefully. The derby will reveal whether this measured rotation turns a comfortable European night into the perfect launchpad for one of the defining fixtures of United’s season.
