Celtic Signs Colombian Striker Camilo Duran for £6m

Celtic have moved early and decisively.

Camilo Duran, the Colombian striker who lit up Qarabag’s season, has become the champions’ first signing of the summer in a deal worth around £6m – a statement that Martin O'Neill has no intention of standing still after reclaiming the title.

A Champions League-hardened arrival

At 24, Duran arrives with the kind of pedigree Celtic have been crying out for in Europe. He hit 15 goals last season for Qarabag, five of them in the Champions League, proving he can handle the noise and the pressure of the biggest stage.

He came to Azerbaijan via Portimonense in Portugal, but it was his form in Europe that pushed him to the top of Celtic’s list. The club identified him early as a priority target, and once the interest was concrete, the player never looked back.

"I'm very happy, it's a dream come true to sign for a big club like Celtic, the biggest in Scotland," Duran said after sealing the move. There was no sense of hesitation in his words. No weighing up options. "When I first heard of the interest there was absolutely no doubt in my mind."

Celtic are getting a forward who has already tasted what so many in Glasgow crave: Champions League goals. “It was a dream come true playing in the Champions League,” he said. “That's what you dream of as a kid, so to score goals was amazing and that's what I want to continue doing here, scoring goals in the Champions League.”

That is the bar he is setting for himself – not just domestic dominance, but decisive nights under the European floodlights.

First Colombian, big expectations

Duran also walks into history. He becomes the first Colombian to play for Celtic, a detail he clearly understands the weight of.

“It's an honour to be the first Colombian to play for Celtic,” he said. For him, the move is more than a transfer; it is a platform. “It's been a dream of mine since I was a kid (to play for my country) and I hope that being here at Celtic and working well, then one day that will become true.”

He promises graft as much as glamour. “I give it my all in every game, with a lot of effort and dedication, and hopefully the goals will come.” The message to O'Neill was just as direct: “I've told the manager how happy I am to be here and that I will hopefully repay him with my performances. It's a real honour to wear this jersey and I hope that this year we'll be champions.”

Duran follows Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, whose one-year deal has been extended after a productive spell in the second half of last season at Parkhead. The Englishman was O’Neill’s first piece of continuity; Duran is the first new pillar of the rebuild.

Sutton’s warning: £6m is only the start

For all the excitement around Duran, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton believes this is just the opening act of a major overhaul.

Sutton, speaking to Sky Sports News, did not sugarcoat the scale of the task facing O’Neill if Celtic are to retain their Premiership crown and make a dent in the Champions League.

"Martin worked wonders last season. I didn't see Celtic winning the title from the position which he was put in on a couple of occasions," he said. "I mean, the run towards the end of the season was extraordinary but I still think you can't get away from the fact there needs to be a lot of change at Celtic in terms of recruitment."

The late surge to the title thrilled the support, but it also masked spells of real struggle. Sutton’s verdict is blunt: the squad needs surgery, not a touch-up.

"They've got the Champions League qualifier which is really important and, however exciting it was for Celtic fans to end up getting over the line last season, you can't get away from the fact that Celtic struggled at times throughout the season. So, Martin will be looking to, I'm sure, bring players in."

The outgoings could be just as significant. Sutton namechecked Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda and Arne Engels as potential departures – all central figures in the current side.

"It'll be interesting to see who goes out from Celtic. It looks like Reo Hatate will go, possibly Daizen Maeda, Arne Engels but they're big players for the team. So, who are Celtic going to replace those type of players with?"

His conclusion was stark. "I think that Celtic are possibly going to have to spend up to or more than £50m really because the squad does need a rebuild."

Duran at £6m is a sizeable outlay by Scottish standards. In Sutton’s eyes, it is only a fraction of what must follow.

Title defence begins under the lights

All of this unfolds against a ticking clock. Celtic open their Scottish Premiership title defence at home to Dundee on August 3, a Monday night kick-off at 7.30pm, live on Sky Sports.

It will round off a landmark opening weekend, with all six top-flight fixtures shown live. A showcase for the league. A spotlight Celtic cannot afford to shrink under.

By then, O’Neill will hope Duran is settled, scoring, and already justifying the faith and the fee. The Colombian has made his promise. Effort, dedication, goals.

The question now is whether this is the first piece of a £50m puzzle, or just the opening move in a far bigger reshaping of Celtic’s ambitions.
