Celtic’s Unthinkable Decision to Sell Arne Engels Before Champions League Play-off
Chris Sutton has torn into Celtic’s decision to cash in on Arne Engels now – branding it “unthinkable” as the Belgian closes in on a £22million move to West Ham.
The 22-year-old midfielder has been one of the breakout stars at Parkhead, and his form last season explains exactly why Nuno Espirito Santo has pushed hard to get him to the London Stadium. Engels delivered seven goals and eight assists in 46 appearances in all competitions, driving Celtic’s midfield and quickly becoming a fans’ favourite.
That impact has come at a price. A record-breaking Championship fee has been agreed, the final paperwork is being tied up, and Engels is on the brink of swapping Glasgow for E20.
Sutton isn’t disputing the player’s quality or West Ham’s ambition. He’s raging about the timing.
“Unthinkable” call before Champions League play-off
Speaking to the Daily Record, the former Celtic striker could not believe the club are prepared to lose Engels before their Champions League play-off against LASK – the defining tie of their early season.
“There's so much on the line, it's unthinkable to go in to this match in a weaker position – but that's what is going to happen with Engels gone,” Sutton said.
He accepts why West Ham are pushing to get the deal done. Nuno’s side kick off their Championship campaign on Sunday and want Engels in the building as quickly as possible.
“I get that it's big money and I understand why West Ham want him now, with the Championship kicking off this weekend,” Sutton continued. “But that's not Celtic's problem. They had to look after themselves.”
For a club whose entire year can pivot on reaching the Champions League group stage, weakening the squad on the eve of a play-off feels, to Sutton, like a self-inflicted wound.
West Ham’s gain, Celtic’s gamble
From an East London perspective, the noise coming out of Glasgow reads like a glowing reference. Celtic are losing a key midfielder at a moment when they need him most. West Ham are picking up a player who has just carried a heavy workload in a title-chasing environment and handled it.
Engels arrives match-ready. He has completed a full pre-season with Celtic and already featured in two Scottish Premiership fixtures, so fitness and sharpness will not be a concern once the move is rubber-stamped.
The Hammers are now racing the clock. If they can register Engels before noon on 15 August, he will be available to make his debut against Burnley. If that deadline is missed, attention turns to the home clash with Charlton on 22 August, or the EFL Cup tie against Southampton on 25 August as the next likely windows for his first appearance.
Whenever he steps onto the pitch, West Ham will expect him to slot straight into a promotion push. That is precisely what stings for Sutton: a player who could have been central to Celtic’s Champions League bid is instead about to fuel a Championship campaign.

The frustration around G40 is easy to understand. Celtic’s biggest task this season is breaking back into Europe’s elite competition. Letting one of their standout performers go days before a decisive qualifier feels like a huge roll of the dice.
At the same time, the move underlines West Ham’s pull. Even after dropping into the second tier, they can still tempt prime-age, top-level talent away from a club preparing for Champions League nights.
Celtic bank the fee. West Ham bank the player. The real verdict on this deal will come under the floodlights – in Glasgow without Engels, and in East London with him.
