Charlton Athletic Triumph Over Derby County in Opening Day Clash

Tyreece Campbell lashed in a superb second-half winner as Charlton Athletic came from behind to sink Derby County and open their league campaign with a sixth opening-day victory in eight seasons.

One sharp touch, one shift to his left, and Campbell drilled the ball low into the far corner, ripping past the keeper and ripping up Derby’s afternoon in London after a bruising week away from the pitch.

The visitors had arrived with the cloud of an aborted takeover by Saudi Arabia government official Turki Al-Sheikh hanging over them, the collapse nudging optimism down just as the Championship curtain went up. On the grass, though, John Eustace’s side initially looked unfazed.

Derby showed the bite and organisation that have quickly become hallmarks of Eustace’s teams and went in at half-time ahead, courtesy of a cleanly struck Sammie Szmodics effort after a neat exchange with Morris. It was no smash-and-grab either; Szmodics had already gone close with another effort moments earlier.

Charlton had flown out of the blocks, but that early tempo brought little real menace. They needed a spark. Campbell provided it.

The winger was electric down the flank, repeatedly tormenting Derby’s back line and peppering the box with dangerous deliveries. One of them almost produced a spectacular opener when Dan McNamara met a cross with a fierce half-volley, only for Charlie Taylor to throw himself in the way with a superb block that summed up Derby’s first-half resistance.

After the interval, the pattern changed. The pressure started to bite.

Timothy Ouma should have levelled when he found himself unmarked at a corner, only to glance his header wide. That miss felt costly for a moment. It didn’t stay that way for long.

Karlan Grant stepped up with a gorgeous cross, whipped into the danger area with real intent, and Lloyd Jones attacked it with conviction, thundering his header in from close range. The Valley roared; Charlton were back on level terms and Derby, suddenly, were rocking.

The momentum had shifted. Campbell made sure Charlton cashed in.

Collecting the ball, he jinked inside onto his left and, with defenders backing off, unleashed a precise, skimming strike into the right corner. It was the finish of a player who had been threatening to decide the contest all afternoon, and it turned Derby’s solid platform into yet another opening-day collapse.

The Rams, staring at a fourth straight defeat on the first day of a league season, tried to claw something back late on. Oscar Fraulo drew an excellent save from Will Mannion, who stayed sharp deep into stoppage time to foil Morris as well.

Charlton held firm. Derby left The Valley empty-handed and nursing familiar early-season scars, while Campbell walked off as the game’s outstanding force and the face of another fast Charlton start to a campaign.
