Cheick Doucouré Set to Make Long-Awaited Return for Crystal Palace

Cheick Doucouré’s wait is finally over.

The Crystal Palace midfielder is set for his first senior appearance in almost 20 months, a comeback that closes the book on a brutal spell of injuries and frustration for one of the club’s key figures.

The 26-year-old, crowned Palace’s Player of the Year in his debut 2022-23 campaign, saw his rise abruptly halted. First came a ruptured Achilles in a 2-1 defeat at Luton Town in November 2023. He fought his way back, managed 13 appearances, then the nightmare repeated in a different form: a torn meniscus in January last year.

Two major injuries. One prime year after another slipping away.

Now, at last, the former Lens midfielder has cleared every hurdle. He proved his fitness with the Under-21s at the end of last season, then came through a full pre-season without a setback. The medical green lights have finally aligned. So has the manager’s.

A smile worth $1million

Pierre Sage could barely hide his delight at having Doucouré back in the fold. The Palace boss spoke of a player whose hunger has only sharpened during his time out.

“When I told him he would be with us today, his smile was incredible,” Sage said. “I think his reaction was as if I gave him $1million. I like this kind of reaction because that's for me the start of how we play football, how we love this game and the only thing he wanted is to come back with the team. This is the first step and he will play a little bit on Tuesday for sure.”

For a squad that has missed his bite, range and authority in midfield, that enthusiasm matters. Doucouré was a serious target for Liverpool in the summer of 2023 before his injuries derailed any move. Inside the club, his absence has felt just as significant.

On Tuesday night, the wait ends. Sage confirmed that Doucouré will feature in the Carabao Cup third-round tie against Middlesbrough, his first competitive outing since a 2-0 win over Leicester City on January 15, 2025. It is more than a routine cup appearance. It is a psychological lift for a group trying to rediscover its edge.

Balancing ambition and rotation

Sage wants to use the cup to give minutes to returning players, but he is not about to rip up his team sheet for the sake of it. Palace’s recent history in knockout competitions – FA Cup winners in 2024-25, FA Community Shield winners in 2025, UEFA Conference League champions last season – has reshaped the club’s expectations. This is no longer a side that treats cups as an afterthought.

“I'm not really fond of big rotations because every time I did that I'm unhappy at the end of the game, not especially with the result but sometimes with the (lack of) coordination of the players,” he admitted. “But at the beginning of the season we have to respect all the commitment of all players during the session and it's maybe the opportunity for them to show it.

“We have to win this game because we are ambitious in this competition too and that's not only about rotation.”

So Doucouré will return, but within a structure Sage is determined to keep stable. Palace have started the Premier League season in stuttering fashion, sitting 13th with one win and two defeats. Confidence is not shattered, but it is fragile enough that the manager refuses to gamble with rhythm.

Palace seek momentum – and their old selves

Saturday’s 3-2 win over Fulham offered a glimpse of the old Palace: aggressive, resilient, dangerous when it matters. Now they want to turn that into a run, not a one-off.

First comes Middlesbrough and the Carabao Cup, a competition Sage openly wants to attack. Then Ipswich Town arrive at Selhurst Park in the league, where Palace will chase back-to-back Premier League victories and a foothold in the table.

Into that landscape steps Doucouré, finally back where he belongs, the long road behind him and a demanding season stretching out in front. How much difference can one returning midfielder make to a side that has tasted silverware and now expects more? Crystal Palace are about to find out.
