Chelsea's Caicedo Ruled Out for Leeds Cup Clash

Moises Caicedo will miss Chelsea’s Carabao Cup clash with Leeds United on Wednesday night, with Xabi Alonso refusing to take even the slightest risk on his record signing.

There is no late twist, no hopeful scan, no surprise inclusion. Caicedo is not ready, Chelsea know it, and Alonso has drawn a clear line after the midfielder’s stuttering start to the season.

Caicedo sat out the opening two games, then lasted just 14 minutes against Brighton before going off in pain. He was missing again for the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal. The club insist the problem is not a “longer-term” issue, but the medical green light for a return has not arrived in time for Leeds.

Alonso has already spoken about avoiding “the same mistake” with Caicedo. That message now has a practical edge. No gamble for a midweek cup tie, no repeat of a rushed comeback.

He is not the only absentee. Marco Palestra is also out, Jordan Henderson is still sidelined with the wrist injury he picked up at the World Cup, and Emmanuel Emegha will miss the tie as well. For a competition that often invites experimentation, Chelsea’s options are being trimmed before Alonso even thinks about rotation.

Palestra blow, but Alonso keeps the long view

On Palestra, Alonso cut through any speculation. Chelsea rate him highly and had been encouraged by what they saw over the summer.

“He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the Premier League,” Alonso said. “He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.”

The frustration is obvious. A new signing, a strong pre-season, and then a setback just as the real games begin. Yet the response is consistent with the handling of Caicedo: no rush, no short-term fix at the expense of the months ahead.

Chelsea know where the real weight of the week lies. Leeds at home in the Carabao Cup matters, but Hull City at Stamford Bridge in the league on Saturday matters more. Alonso will still respect the cup, but he will not bend his fitness plans around it.

Rotation coming as league takes priority

With that in mind, changes are expected. Levi Colwill, who missed the Arsenal defeat with a minor fitness concern, is fit again and available for selection. His return gives Alonso the chance to freshen up the back line without weakening it.

Mike Penders is in contention to start in goal, a logical moment to hand minutes to the understudy. Pep Chavarria and Valentin Barco are also pushing for starts, with both full-backs offering energy and a point to prove.

A rotated but serious Chelsea side is likely to look something like this:

Chelsea predicted XI vs Leeds United
Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill, Neto; Barco, Lavia, Chavarria; Rogers, Palmer, Welbeck.

It is not a second-string side. It is a squad performance, shaped by injury and by the demands of the calendar.

Injury picture before Leeds

The situation is brutally simple.

  • Out: Moises Caicedo, Marco Palestra, Jordan Henderson, Emmanuel Emegha
  • Doubts: None

Kick-off is at 8pm BST on Wednesday, September 9 at Stamford Bridge. Alonso will rotate where he can, but not his stance on risk. Progression in the cup is the target, yet every selection call is made with one eye on the league and the months still to come.
