Chelsea's Defensive Clear-Out Under Xabi Alonso
Chelsea’s clear-out under Xabi Alonso is starting to bite, and some big defensive names are edging towards the exit.
The new head coach has put 11 players up for sale as he tries to carve order out of a bloated squad, and three centre-backs now look poised to leave in quick succession.
Alonso’s ruthless reset
Chelsea have attacked this summer window with familiar ferocity. Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck have already arrived, and another deal has been agreed this week as the rebuild gathers pace.
But the real story at Stamford Bridge is who is going out, not who is coming in.
Sales have already brought in more than £100m, with Andrey Santos, Marc Cucurella and Tyrique George all moved on. Even established names are not immune: Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto have all been linked with departures, with The Athletic reporting they are not on any internal “not for sale” list.
Manchester City, having looked at Fernandez and Gusto earlier in the window, now have Neto in their sights as they circle Stamford Bridge for opportunities.
The same report lists Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana and Emmanuel Emegha among those available, while the centre-back trio of Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah are expected to move on.
Chalobah to lead the defensive exodus
The first domino is ready to fall.
Chalobah is set to be the opening defensive departure, with Chelsea understood to have finally agreed a deal with Serie A side Como. It would end a long period of uncertainty for the academy product and mark the start of a significant reshaping of Alonso’s back line.
And he may not be alone for long.
Journalist Nicolo Schira reports that Badiashile and Disasi are both closing in on their next destinations as Chelsea accelerate their clear-out at the back.
On Badiashile, Schira says there is an agreement in principle with Napoli on a deal running until 2031, structured as a one-season loan plus four additional years, with a salary of €2.8m per year. Negotiations between Napoli and Chelsea are said to be progressing well over a loan with an option to buy.
Disasi, meanwhile, has been searching for a new home after his loan spell at West Ham last season. Crystal Palace, according to Schira, are now in pole position to land him on loan from Chelsea, with an option to buy that could become an obligation if certain conditions are met.
Three centre-backs out, one summer. Alonso’s defensive department is being ripped up and rewritten in real time.
Mudryk’s return and a different kind of decision
Not every big call this summer is about sales.
Mykhaylo Mudryk’s situation offers a different kind of dilemma for Alonso after the winger returned from a doping ban. He stepped back onto the pitch in Chelsea’s defeat to Juventus this week, a short cameo that carried more emotional weight than competitive impact.
Alonso did not hide what it meant to the club.
“Yes, for sure, I’m really pleased for him. It was emotional for everyone from the club to see him back, especially when I told him that before the game that was my idea, that he could play 10-15 minutes,” he told reporters.
“He was thrilled, for sure. It was, after such a long period, to be back on the pitch, it was a great feeling for him and a great feeling for everyone as well.”
The manager must now decide what role Mudryk plays in this new Chelsea, just as he decides which other high-profile names can be sacrificed to streamline a vast squad.
The departures are coming. The question is how different this team will look by the time Alonso is finished shaping it.
