Chelsea Faces Hull City with Limited Options Ahead of International Break

Chelsea head into the weekend with momentum restored but options still restricted, as Xabi Alonso confirmed four absentees for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Hull City.

The midweek Carabao Cup tie against Leeds United brought some much-needed relief. Stung by a derby defeat to Arsenal, Chelsea rotated heavily, only to be dragged into a scrap that demanded help from their main men. Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers came off the bench to turn the game around and drag the Blues into the fourth round. It was a reminder: this squad is talented, but it is also stretched.

Now comes Hull at the weekend. And the cavalry is not arriving yet.

Caicedo still out as Chelsea play the waiting game

Moises Caicedo will again be missing from the midfield. Alonso shut down any hope of a surprise return when he faced the media on Friday.

“Not yet,” he said when asked if Caicedo would be available for Hull. “Let’s see for Brentford, but unluckily not at the moment to take risks with him. Not yet, we are not there yet.”

Chelsea have had to manage without their marquee midfielder for most of the season so far. The Ecuador international picked up an injury before the campaign even began, then finally made his first appearance in the wild 4-3 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge in late August. He came on in the second half, only to suffer a setback that forced him off again.

The message is clear: no shortcuts this time. With a demanding schedule and a longer-than-usual international break looming, Chelsea will not gamble on Caicedo.

New signings still waiting for their first kick

The wait goes on for three of Chelsea’s summer arrivals as well. Marco Palestra, Jordan Henderson, and Emmanuel Emegha will all miss the Hull clash, Alonso confirmed.

Asked if any of the trio could make the squad, the answer was blunt: “No.”

Pressed specifically on Henderson and Emegha, he added: “Not tomorrow. We hope they can be (available) for Brentford, and we will see.”

Like Caicedo, Palestra was hit by injury just before the season started. None of the three has yet made an official appearance for the club, a frustrating reality for a team trying to build rhythm and cohesion under a new manager.

There is at least a hint of progress. Palestra has recently started individual training, a strong sign he is edging closer to a full return. Henderson is back working with the group after fracturing his left forearm during the 2026 World Cup, but the medical green light to play still has not arrived.

International break shapes Chelsea’s risk calculus

Chelsea have only two fixtures left before the September international break: Hull this weekend and Brentford after that. Then comes a three-week pause in club action, with national teams cramming four matches into that window as two international breaks are merged into one.

That calendar twist changes everything. With no further break in October, pushing players back too soon now could backfire badly later.

For Alonso and his staff, the logic is brutal but simple. Protect the long term. Resist the temptation to rush Caicedo, Palestra, Henderson, or Emegha for the sake of one extra game. Let the international break act as a natural buffer, and aim for a cleaner slate on the other side.

If anyone does sneak back earlier than planned, Palestra and Henderson look the most likely. One is already working alone on the grass, the other is with the squad but waiting on final clearance.

Until then, Chelsea must keep winning with what they have. Hull first, Brentford next, and then a three-week pause that could define how strong this squad looks when the real grind of the season begins.
