Chelsea Targets Maxence Lacroix for £52 Million Move

Chelsea are not tinkering this summer. They are tearing up the blueprint at the back and drawing a new one in bolder ink.

At the heart of it sits Maxence Lacroix.

The French defender is due to undergo his Chelsea medical today, a key step before completing a £52 million move from Crystal Palace, according to British newspaper The Sun. Once the checks are done, one of the window’s most striking defensive deals in England should fall into place.

He is 26, already proven in the Premier League, and has been pushed to the top of Chelsea’s shortlist in this window. New head coach Xabi Alonso wants steel and authority in his back line; Lacroix offers both, with the added benefit of knowing the league inside out.

Chelsea’s hierarchy did not hesitate once they settled on him. His experience in English football convinced them he could walk straight into the team and compete immediately, not spend months adjusting in the shadows. They moved quickly to close talks, sensing an opportunity to secure a defender entering his prime.

Arsenal had tested the waters earlier. Before the World Cup, they asked about Lacroix as they looked for cover amid the long-term injury to William Saliba. The interest was real, but it never hardened into a formal bid, and the door remained open for Chelsea to stride through.

Crystal Palace, for their part, drove a hard bargain. They initially set the bar at £60 million, but held firm on a minimum of £52 million — matching the fee Tottenham paid Brighton for Jan Paul van Hecke earlier in the summer. Chelsea agreed to meet that number, and the deal accelerated from there.

Palace do not lose a fringe player. During his time at Selhurst Park, Lacroix lifted the FA Cup, the UEFA Europa Conference League and the Community Shield. Three trophies, three reminders of why he is viewed as one of the standout defenders in English football in recent seasons. Those medals have carried weight in the conversations at Stamford Bridge.

Lacroix is not the only defensive piece Chelsea are trying to slot into place. The club have turned their gaze to John Stones, now a free agent. Alonso wants more than just legs and energy; he wants leadership, someone who has seen title races, European nights and the pressure that comes with them. Stones, with his vast experience, fits that profile.

While new faces edge closer, the exits are gathering pace too.

Trevoh Chalobah, a product of Chelsea’s academy and a player who has fought for minutes through several managerial changes, has offers on the table from Italian side Como, coached by former Chelsea favourite Cesc Fabregas. A move to Serie A would mark a significant step away from the club where he grew up.

Axel Disasi is also likely to be on the move. After spending the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United, the defender has attracted interest across Europe. Milan are currently leading the chase, with his value understood to be around £25 million. For Chelsea, it represents both a clean break and a useful injection of funds into Alonso’s rebuild.

One glance at the pattern tells the story. Established defenders are being ushered towards the door while targeted, ready-made replacements are brought in. This is not a gentle evolution; it is a rapid reset designed to give Alonso a back line in his own image.
