Chelsea Faces Midfield Challenge Against Luton Cup Tie

Chelsea will have to navigate their Carabao Cup second-round tie against Luton Town without two of their key midfield options, as Xabi Alonso confirmed Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra are both ruled out.

The pair missed the opening Premier League win over Fulham, a 3-2 victory that gave Alonso a positive start to the season, and they will stay on the sidelines when Luton visit Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.

“Not for tomorrow, both won’t make it [against Luton],” Alonso said in his pre-match press conference, drawing a clear line under any late hopes of a return.

There is at least a hint of optimism around Caicedo’s short-term prospects. Alonso revealed the Ecuadorian could be back in contention within days rather than weeks.

“Let’s see, hopefully Moi could make it for the weekend, but we need to check a little bit more with Marco,” he added, underlining that Palestra faces a slightly more uncertain timeline.

The rest of the squad emerges in far better shape. Those involved against Fulham are available again, with no fresh setbacks from the league opener.

“Otherwise, everyone from Monday is okay, Cole [Palmer] is absolutely fine. Penders is part of the squad, so he has an opportunity,” Alonso said.

So Chelsea head into the cup tie light in midfield but with competition sharpening elsewhere. For fringe players and youngsters like Penders, this is exactly the kind of night that can change a season.
