Chelsea's New Defender Palestra: A Tactical Asset for the Premier League

On the eve of Chelsea’s Premier League opener at Fulham on Monday night, Alonso could barely hide his excitement about one of his newest options.

The Spanish manager picked out Palestra as something different, a defender shaped by Italian football and all the tactical demands that come with it.

“I would say it's probably unusual in England because, in Italy for example, it's quite common, and he has had this education in Italian football to play both profiles,” Alonso said, stressing how the newcomer is comfortable on either side of the defence. “It doesn't matter if you are right-footed or left-footed, just that you are versatile. So he has this option, this energy. He's something different, maybe not that common here, but in Italy it's quite common.”

That versatility has already caught the eye at Cobham. Coaches see a player who can shift roles without losing intensity; teammates see someone who can plug gaps all over the back line.

Alonso also pointed to the way Palestra has settled off the pitch, just as quickly as he has adapted on it.

“He's had a great impact as well in the changing room. He's integrated really well,” the Chelsea boss said. “He's a great guy and with this freshness that he has brought, apart from his football qualities, he's a very great addition to the club.”

Chelsea head to Craven Cottage with a new campaign in front of them and a defender who already looks ready to live up to that billing.
