Chelsea Close in on £16.3 Million Signing of Pep Chavarria
Chelsea are closing in on a £16.3million move for Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria as Xabi Alonso’s Stamford Bridge rebuild gathers pace.
The 28-year-old, a left-sided defender who helped his side reach last season’s Conference League final, is expected to arrive as direct competition for Jorrel Hato after Marc Cucurella’s departure to Real Madrid. Talks are advanced and all sides are confident of getting the deal over the line, with Chelsea having tracked Chavarria for much of the summer.
It is a signing that fits the new brief in west London. After years of gambling on raw potential, Chelsea’s hierarchy have pivoted towards proven, battle-tested players to drag the club back into title contention.
Chavarria is not a household name, and his route to the top has been anything but fast-tracked. Despite being 28, he has only four seasons of top-flight football behind him, stepping up from Segunda Division side Real Zaragoza in 2022. But his experience in European competition and his ability to operate on the left side of defence make him a targeted, rather than speculative, addition.
He would also continue a striking trend under Alonso. The new manager has wasted no time in adding know-how to a dressing room that stumbled to 10th place last season. Chelsea have already brought in 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton, while 36-year-old Jordan Henderson arrived on Monday after leaving Brentford. These are not developmental projects; they are players signed to lead.
Chavarria is set to become the club’s third defensive reinforcement of the summer. Right-back Marco Palestra joined from Atalanta in July, and Chelsea confirmed the capture of Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace last week. Piece by piece, Alonso is reshaping the back line in his own image.
One position he is not touching is in goal.
Despite persistent links with Porto’s Diogo Costa, PA understands there has been no contact between the clubs and Chelsea hold no interest in the Portugal international, who featured five times at the World Cup. Alonso is content with his current group: last season’s number one Robert Sanchez, deputy Filip Jorgensen and 21-year-old Belgian Mike Penders.
The churn elsewhere in the squad, though, is significant. On Monday, Chelsea agreed a deal for Trevoh Chalobah to join Como, where former Blues midfielder Cesc Fabregas is preparing to lead the Italian side into their first Champions League campaign. The agreement covers both the fee and personal terms, and includes a sell-on clause that will see Chelsea receive a proportion of any future transfer.
Chalobah’s exit adds to a growing list of departures. Cucurella has already gone, while Tyrique George and Andrey Santos are also leaving Stamford Bridge as the club trims and rebalances a bloated squad.
This is all part of a strategic reset triggered by last season’s dismal finish. The message from the board was blunt: the recruitment model had to change. The obsession with hoarding young, inexperienced talent would give way to a more balanced approach, with signings expected to contribute immediately to a title challenge rather than merely represent long-term assets.
The spending has reflected that ambition. In July, Chelsea smashed their own transfer record to land Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m, a statement deal at the top end of the pitch. Argentina international Valentin Barco followed from Strasbourg on Sunday, adding further quality and depth.
Now comes Chavarria, another piece in an increasingly coherent puzzle. Chelsea wanted age, experience and edge. Alonso wanted a different profile at left-back.
If the deal closes as expected, both will have their man – and the shape of the new Chelsea will look a little clearer.
