Chelsea's New Era: Signing Marco Palestra and Targeting Jacobo Ramon
Chelsea’s new era under Xabi Alonso has barely begun, but the club have already landed the first statement signing tailored to his ideas – and they are eyeing up another.
Marco Palestra is heading to Stamford Bridge. Inter Milan thought they were closing in. Atalanta were deep in talks. Then Chelsea arrived, late and decisive, and walked away with one of Italy’s most versatile young defenders.
Alonso steps in – and swings the deal
This was not just a boardroom operation. According to Fabrizio Romano, Alonso personally intervened to tilt the deal in Chelsea’s favour, speaking directly with Palestra to sell him on the project in London.
That conversation proved crucial. The 21-year-old Italy international, capable of playing on both flanks as full-back or wing-back, had serious admirers in Serie A and beyond. La Gazzetta dello Sport detailed how Alonso told Palestra he had followed him closely at Cagliari and had been struck by his “English-style” physicality. The Spaniard even dropped in some Italian during the talks, a small touch that clearly resonated.
Alonso sees Palestra as a flexible weapon: on the right, battling Malo Gusto; on the left, where Marc Cucurella has just departed. For a coach who trusted and elevated young talent at Bayer Leverkusen, this is a familiar blueprint transplanted to west London.
Chelsea hijack Inter and pay big
Romano announced the breakthrough on X at 7:30am on June 24 with his trademark “here we go.” The deal is verbally agreed between Chelsea, Atalanta and the player.
Atalanta will receive a package worth over €55 million, including a sell-on clause, for a long-term contract with the right wing-back. It is a significant outlay for a player still at the start of his top-level career, but it fits the Chelsea pattern: pay early, pay big, and trust the upside.
Inter, who had moved into advanced talks, have been left empty-handed. Chelsea’s owners, BlueCo, once again showed their willingness to cut across established negotiations when they see a target they like – especially one aligned with the new head coach’s vision.
Eyes still on Italy – Jacobo Ramon in the frame
Palestra may not be the last arrival from Serie A.
Romano has revealed that Chelsea are also tracking Jacobo Ramon, the Spanish centre-back who exploded onto the scene at Como under Cesc Fabregas. Ramon joined the club from Real Madrid in the summer of 2025 and rapidly became one of their standout performers, helping drive Como into the Champions League for next season.
At 21, he fits Chelsea’s recruitment profile almost perfectly: young, technically polished, and already tested in a demanding tactical environment. Fabregas has built a possession-based side at Como, and Ramon has flourished at the heart of it.
Chelsea’s interest surfaced during conversations between the two clubs over Trevoh Chalobah. Como asked about the Chelsea defender, but his price proved too steep for them at this stage. Chelsea, sensing an opening, turned the discussion towards Ramon.
Romano describes Ramon as “appreciated” at Stamford Bridge and confirms he is one of four or five names on Chelsea’s list for the centre-back position. This is not a one-target strategy; it is a shortlist, and Ramon sits firmly on it.
Real Madrid still in the picture
Any move for Ramon will be complicated by Real Madrid’s lingering influence. The defender is effectively co-owned, with Los Blancos retaining 50% and a buy-back clause.
That structure hands Madrid leverage and ensures any negotiation will involve more than just Chelsea and Como. For a club that has already seen one of its former prospects shine in Italy, Madrid will think carefully before allowing Ramon to leave their orbit entirely.
Chelsea, though, have made their intentions clear. With Palestra almost over the line and Ramon under close watch, Alonso’s defensive rebuild is taking shape quickly. The question now is simple: how far, and how fast, will this new Chelsea push their recruitment drive to match the ambition of their new manager?
