Chelsea Targets Set-Piece Specialist Austin MacPhee from Aston Villa
Chelsea have opened talks to bring Aston Villa’s set-piece guru Austin MacPhee to Stamford Bridge, targeting one of the most coveted specialists in the modern game as Xabi Alonso fine-tunes his backroom team.
They are not alone. Other Premier League clubs are in the conversation, and Saudi Pro League sides have also registered interest, turning the chase for the 46-year-old Scot into a battle of projects, pay packets and ambition.
Elite operator on dead balls
MacPhee’s reputation has been built on numbers that make clubs sit up. During the 2023-24 season, Aston Villa scored more goals from set-pieces than any other side across Europe’s top five leagues. That is not a quirk of a single campaign. Villa followed it up by staying among the top five in that metric the following season and finished last term joint-top with Arsenal for set-piece goals in the Premier League.
Those routines have underpinned Villa’s rise under Unai Emery. They have helped deliver a Europa Conference League title and a place in the Champions League, transforming dead balls into a reliable weapon rather than a hopeful punt into the box.
MacPhee has done it while juggling dual responsibilities. For the past five years he has combined his Villa duties with a set-piece role for the Portugal national team, working under Roberto Martinez up to and including the World Cup. That blend of club and international experience only sharpens his appeal.
Release clause and Villa reshuffle
Any move will not be straightforward. Villa are entitled to compensation, with MacPhee’s contract understood to contain a specific release clause. Activate it, and he can walk. Until then, Villa hold a degree of leverage over one of the most influential members of Emery’s staff.
He is also not the only figure expected to depart Villa Park this summer. After a cycle that has taken the club from mid-table drift to European silverware and Champions League qualification, Emery’s inner circle is being tested by outside offers. MacPhee, given his impact on the training ground and on match days, would be one of the most significant exits.
Alonso’s gap on the training pitch
At Chelsea, the need is clear. New manager Xabi Alonso has room in his staff, particularly around set-pieces. Bernardo Cueva, recruited from Brentford in 2024 for £750,000 to lead that department, is stepping away from a visible touchline role and moving into a more behind-the-scenes position.
That change leaves a vacancy for a front-line specialist to shape routines, drill details and stand alongside Alonso on the edge of the technical area when corners and free-kicks can tilt tight games. MacPhee, with his track record of squeezing goals out of marginal moments, fits that brief almost perfectly.
Chelsea and Villa already intertwined
The pursuit of MacPhee comes in a week that has already tightened the links between Chelsea and Villa. Chelsea completed the signing of Morgan Rogers from Villa for £117m, a headline-grabbing fee that underlines how aggressively the London club are backing Alonso’s vision.
Alejandro Garnacho has moved the other way, heading to Villa on an initial loan that is expected to become permanent via an option to buy. The traffic between the clubs has been heavy; now Chelsea want to add one of Emery’s most trusted specialists to the flow.
Whether MacPhee chooses the pull of Stamford Bridge, another Premier League project, or the financial muscle of Saudi Arabia will say plenty about where the balance of power really lies in football’s new arms race over marginal gains.
