Chelsea vs Brighton: Is Moises Caicedo Ready for Sunday?
Chelsea face Brighton on Sunday with one question towering over the rest: is Moises Caicedo ready?
Xabi Alonso wants him on the pitch at Stamford Bridge. The medical team are still not sure he can be. The midfielder picked up an injury in training last week and has already sat out wins over Fulham and Luton Town.
“He is hopefully training [on Friday]. We are hopeful he can be involved. We are still checking; no decision made,” Alonso said. Optimism, yes. Certainty, no.
Caicedo call will define Chelsea’s midfield
If Caicedo makes it, Chelsea gain control, aggression and a natural organiser at the base of midfield. If he does not, the picture changes, but it does not collapse.
Alonso can still turn to Reece James, Valentin Barco or Romeo Lavia in the middle. Enzo Fernandez is the other major variable. He was expected to be in the squad against Luton, then left out, with interest from Manchester City swirling around him. For Sunday, the noise is secondary. The only issue that matters is whether he is fit, available and selected.
Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra remain out, which strips away some depth and underlines why Caicedo’s situation carries so much weight. Chelsea have shown they can survive short spells without him. They are simply a stronger, more coherent side when he starts.
Martinez arrival puts spotlight on Sanchez
The goalkeeping situation has stopped being a subplot. It is now a live decision.
Chelsea have agreed a £7.5 million deal with Aston Villa for Emiliano Martinez, and the ripple effect is already visible. Mike Penders started and kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 win over Luton, while Robert Sanchez watched from the bench. Alonso insists he already knows who will start against Brighton, but is keeping that choice to himself.
At centre-back, there is better news. Wesley Fofana returns from suspension and is available for his first competitive minutes of the season, a significant boost to a defence still finding its rhythm. Young Josh Acheampong is also set to be involved in the matchday squad.
Levi Colwill and Geovany Quenda both missed the Luton game, but Alonso played down any alarm. “Our plan is that they are training [Friday] preparing for Sunday,” he said. Colwill, in particular, is being eased back after injury. Three games in a week so soon would be a gamble Chelsea are not prepared to take. The message is clear: build him up, do not break him again.
Palmer to lead evolving attack
Cole Palmer went the full 90 minutes on Thursday and, by all indications, will go again. There is no sign of him being rested. He remains central to Alonso’s attacking plan, linking with Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro as Chelsea continue to sharpen a new-look front line.
The predicted XI reflects both the uncertainty and the opportunity:
Predicted Chelsea XI (3-4-2-1):
Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Acheampong; Gusto, Caicedo, James, Chavarria; Palmer, Rogers; Joao Pedro.
Caicedo and Fernandez are the major doubts. Palestra and Henderson are ruled out. Kick-off is 2pm BST on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Stamford Bridge.
For Chelsea, the task is stripped back to its essentials: get Caicedo on the grass if they can, make the right goalkeeper call, and own the middle of the pitch. The rest of their season might just flow from those three decisions.
