Chelsea vs Real Sociedad: Alonso's Stamford Bridge Debut
Xabi Alonso walks out at Stamford Bridge for the first time today, and fate has handed him a familiar opponent. Real Sociedad – the club that raised him and then trusted him with their B team – now arrive as the final act of Chelsea’s pre-season, and as the first real glimpse of what his version of the Blues might look like in SW6.
This is a friendly in name. In reality, it is a selection trial with 90 minutes on the clock.
New faces, first impressions
Morgan Rogers is expected to pull on a Chelsea shirt for the first time, the headline attraction in a game packed with subplots. The forward is in line to start as Alonso looks to sharpen his attacking options before the Premier League curtain goes up.
He is not alone. Valentin Barco, Jordan Henderson and Maxence Lacroix are all pushing for their first pre-season minutes, while Pep Chavarria has joined the group after sealing his move from Rayo Vallecano and could feature from the bench.
Alonso’s job is to knit all of this together in a team that still feels like a work in progress. His pre-season tour of Australia and Asia delivered mixed performances and uneven results. One last outing at home offers the chance to send everyone into the new campaign with something sturdier than vague optimism.
A morale-boosting win against his boyhood club would do nicely.
Enzo Fernandez saga parked – for now
At least Alonso now has a full squad to choose from. The final wave of post-World Cup absentees has reported back to Cobham over the past few days, including Enzo Fernandez.
The midfielder has dominated Chelsea’s summer agenda, heavily linked with Manchester City and Real Madrid. Chelsea, wary of dragging the issue into the season, drew a line in the sand: any bids had to land by 5pm BST on Friday.
They didn’t. With a £120million valuation set and the deadline passed, the club are no longer entertaining offers. Fernandez stays, and Alonso can plan with him – at least until the next window.
Squad overload, futures on the line
If the Fernandez situation is settled, the rest of the squad is anything but. Chelsea’s group is swollen and unwieldy, and the clock on the transfer window is ticking loudly in the background.
Summer signing Emmanuel Emegha is back in training after a hamstring problem that wiped out his tour and could get his first taste of action against Sociedad. He joins a crowded forward department where almost no one feels truly safe.
Liam Delap, valued at £50m by the club, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu all face uncertain futures. All three strikers could still leave before the deadline, with Alonso yet to decide who will back up first-choice No9 Joao Pedro, alongside Danny Welbeck.
The same tension runs through the defence. As many as five centre-backs could depart before the window closes in two weeks. Tosin Adarabioyo is drawing interest from several Premier League sides and Benfica. Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile have long been considered expendable, with Chelsea actively working on exits for both.
Mamadou Sarr might yet cling on to a first-team spot, though a Premier League loan remains the preferred route if the right offer lands. Aaron Anselmino was also lined up for a loan move, but a hamstring injury in the final game of the tour against Johor Darul Ta'zim has changed that picture. He now looks set to stay put and recover in-house.
Every minute at Stamford Bridge this afternoon carries weight. Some players will be playing for places; others, quite possibly, for shop-window value.
How Chelsea could line up
Alonso is expected to name a strong side, blending established starters with those needing a look before decisions are made.
