Cristian Chivu did not bother to hide his satisfaction. Sitting in front of the cameras at his pre-match press conference, the Inter coach spoke like a man who knows a cornerstone has just dropped into place.
John Stones, the England defender prised from Manchester City, has given Inter’s back line a different sheen. Chivu made that clear.
“I’m happy with his arrival; he is important to us for many reasons – for his quality, his personality, and his charisma. He raises the level of our defence,” the manager said, his words as much a message to the dressing room as to the outside world.
Stones as a standard-setter
Inter already see themselves as competitive. Chivu repeated the word more than once. But competitive is one thing; aligned with a club’s ambitions is another. Stones, in his eyes, belongs to the second category.
Right now, Inter are still incomplete. Some players are on post-World Cup holidays, the squad is not yet fully tuned, and the transfer window still has a month to run. None of that stopped Chivu from outlining what Stones represents.
“We’re enjoying who we have here, waiting for those returning from post-World Cup holidays, and then we still have a month left in the transfer window. The squad is competitive, but you always need key players who can make you take that quality leap and allow you to stay aligned with this club’s ambitions.”
A “quality leap”. That is the phrase that lingers. Stones is not being presented as a mere reinforcement; he is being framed as a reference point, someone who can drag the entire defensive unit to a higher standard.
A test against City, and a reminder of the gap
The timing of his arrival adds a layer of intrigue. Inter are about to face Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City in a high-profile test, a meeting with the very club Stones has just left.
“It’s special to face a great team like City. Obviously, we’re not at 100% physically, but we’ll do our best,” Chivu said.
There was no attempt to pretend Inter are fully ready. Pre-season legs are heavy, rhythms are still being found. Yet the coach used the occasion to underline the club’s broader strategy.
“The squad is competitive, but there’s always a need for important players. Stones raises the bar. We are keeping an eye out for opportunities.”
That last line matters. Stones is a headline signing, but he is not the end of the story.
Market still open, standards still rising
Inter’s summer business will not stop at centre-back. The club is actively looking to strengthen the right flank, an area identified as a priority. Chivu did not name names, but he did spell out the profile: players who can come in and immediately lift the overall level.
At the same time, he urged calm. No panic, no scattergun spending, no rush to tick boxes.
“Patience is needed, the market is still long. We are all good at understanding what’s missing right now, especially regarding squad depth,” he said.
Chivu’s message to the board has been consistent: do not just fill gaps, raise standards.
“I have always asked to raise the bar and bring in important players who want to be part of this wonderful group. We are paying attention to opportunities to raise the level that these lads have maintained for many years.”
That is the tightrope Inter are walking. Respect for a core that has carried the club for seasons, combined with a clear demand for fresh, high-level competition.
Stones is the first major piece of that puzzle. The right-wing addition is expected to be the next. With a month of the window left and a meeting with City offering a sharp reminder of Europe’s benchmark, the question is no longer whether Inter are competitive.
