Why Premier League Referee Chris Kavanagh Can Officiate Manchester City Matches

Liverpool fans have voiced frustration after Premier League referee Chris Kavanagh, born in Manchester, was assigned to oversee a recent match involving Manchester City. The controversy arose following his decision to send off Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch during their 3-0 loss to Man City.

Incident Sparks Debate

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola criticized Kavanagh’s call, stating the initial foul committed by Gravenberch did not warrant a yellow card. According to Iraola, it was a minor contact that shouldn't have been penalized so harshly. This sending off came in the 62nd minute and preceded three quick goals from Man City within 13 minutes.

"I think the first foul of Ryan is never a yellow card, never. These kinds of games, just a stomp on the big toe, or something minor. He doesn't even call the foul straight away. He lets a bit go," Iraola said. "I don't know why after he shows the yellow card, because it's not a situation where it leaves an advantage."

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher also weighed in on Sky Sports, agreeing that the first yellow card was too severe and issued too quickly.

Why Kavanagh Is Permitted to Referee Manchester City

Questions have arisen about how Kavanagh, hailing from Ashton-under-Lyne in Greater Manchester, is allowed to officiate matches involving both Manchester City and Manchester United. Some Premier League referees are restricted from overseeing games involving clubs they are perceived to support. For instance, Michael Oliver cannot referee Newcastle United or Sunderland due to personal ties, and Australian official Jarred Gillet is barred from Everton and Liverpool fixtures because of his childhood support for Liverpool.

Kavanagh, however, officially supports Droylsden FC, a non-league club based in Greater Manchester competing in the North West Counties League Premier Division. This neutral allegiance classifies him as free from conflict under Premier League guidelines, allowing him to referee both Manchester clubs without restrictions.

This same rule applied to recently retired referee Anthony Taylor, who was from Wythenshawe, Manchester but supported Altrincham, another non-league team, which permitted him to take charge of Manchester United and City matches.

Liverpool's Current Standing and Upcoming Fixtures

After losing to Manchester City, Liverpool sit ninth in the Premier League after six matches. Under Iraola’s management, they have only secured two league wins so far. Their next challenge is an away game against Brentford scheduled for Saturday.
