Cillian Sheridan Backs Motherwell's European Chances

Cillian Sheridan does not deal in half-measures. Asked for his view on Motherwell’s European prospects, the former Fir Park forward did not hedge, did not reach for caveats. He simply stuck his chin out.

“I’m going to put my neck out and say I think they will go through,” he told the BBC’s Scottish Football Podcast.

It’s easy to see why he feels so sure. On Thursday night, in Alfred Johansson’s first competitive match in charge, Motherwell did what every new manager craves in Europe: they took control of the tie early. A 2-0 win over HB Torshavn at Fir Park, built on goals from Martin Moormann and Lukas Fadinger, has given the Steelmen a clear advantage heading into the second leg of their Conference League second-round qualifier.

The scoreline was tidy. The statement behind it, even more so.

Johansson, stepping into the dugout for the first time in anger, watched his side handle the occasion with a calm authority. Moormann struck, Fadinger followed, and Motherwell banked the kind of cushion that makes long away trips feel a little less daunting.

Now comes the journey to the Faroe Islands and the tight, testing surroundings that so often catch out complacent travellers. Sheridan, though, is having none of the usual caution.

“You can’t go away to the Faroe Islands and lose a two-goal lead,” he said, underlining his belief that this tie should be beyond HB. “Plus this is the Conference League, it’s not the champions of the Faroe Islands, it’s their team that finished in the Conference League positions.”

HB Torshavn sit fifth in the Faroese top flight after 16 games, a step back from last season’s second-place finish that earned them this European shot. On paper, they are dangerous enough, but hardly the heavyweight of their own league, never mind the continent.

That context fuels Sheridan’s certainty. He knows the club, knows the demands of Fir Park, and knows what a two-goal lead should mean at this level.

“I’m willing to have egg on my face at the end of this,” he added, “but no, they’re not going to give up this lead.”

For Johansson and Motherwell, the task is simple and unforgiving: turn a strong first impression into a completed job and a place in the third qualifying round. The margin is there. The belief is there. Now they have to prove Sheridan right.
