City Maintains Perfect Start with Haaland's Goal Against Coventry

City’s perfect league start is still intact after a narrow 1-0 win over Coventry, sealed – inevitably – by Erling Haaland. Now comes the real juggling act for Enzo Maresca as the European campaign begins at the Estadio do Dragao.

Injuries cloud Coventry win

The Coventry game delivered more than three points. It brought problems.

Nico O’Reilly was set to start but pulled up in the warm-up with a lower back issue, forcing a late reshuffle. Enzo Fernandez stepped in to fill the gap. Then Deadline Day arrival Iliman Ndiaye limped off with what looked like a knock, adding his name to a growing list of concerns that already includes winger Jeremy Doku.

For a squad preparing to fight on four fronts, those are the kind of setbacks that can quickly pile up.

Maresca sticks to his promise

Maresca had already nailed his colours to the mast. Rotation was coming, no matter what.

After the Coventry win, he spelled it out: Ayyoub Bouaddi, Ryan McAidoo and Ndiaye need Champions League minutes, and they would get them. “On Tuesday they are going to start to get minutes in the Champions League,” he said, making his intention crystal clear.

The only question was whether injuries would force him to tear up the plan before a ball was kicked in Porto.

Ndiaye has at least offered encouragement. He has been pictured in training, a sign he could be ready to feature. If he is passed fit, he is expected to take up his spot on the left flank. On the opposite side, McAidoo is in line to come in, with Antoine Semenyo likely to drop out, while Enzo Fernandez is set to operate as the No 10.

Youth, balance and a familiar spearhead

Behind them, the midfield has a fresh, almost experimental feel. Bouaddi will anchor the centre alongside Elliot Anderson at the base, a youthful pairing charged with protecting what should be a familiar back four.

Josko Gvardiol, Marc Guehi, Ruben Dias and Abdukodir Khusanov are all expected to keep their places, offering continuity where Maresca can least afford disruption. Matheus Nunes has been named in the travelling squad as well and could be used to tilt the balance if the game demands more control or energy from the bench.

Up front, the debate is constant, even if the answer rarely changes. Maresca has been open: Haaland cannot play every minute as City chase trophies on multiple fronts. He will need rest. He will need to be managed.

Yet this is Porto, this is the Champions League, and City are still setting the tone for their season. For all the talk of rotation, the prolific Norwegian is still expected to lead the line in Portugal – because when the stakes rise early, managers usually turn to their surest guarantee of goals.
