“We’ve never spoke about it. It’s one of them. He does it. I do it,” Palmer said on the club’s pre-season tour, as quoted by talkSPORT. “I’ve trademarked it so if he tries to do anything, he’ll have the bailiffs at his door. Nah, we’ll do it together.”
The line landed as intended: half-warning, mostly wink.
The ‘cold’ war that never was
The celebration, arms folded and expression frozen, has become one of the most recognisable images in English football over the past year. Both Palmer and Rogers have leaned on it regularly after scoring, a visual calling card for two attackers who came through the ranks together at Manchester City.
Rogers, it’s worth noting, got there first. He was the one who unveiled the “cold” pose in a professional game before Palmer ever did it on a Premier League stage. But Palmer moved quickly off the pitch. Last year he officially trademarked the celebration with the UK Intellectual Property Office, giving him legal ownership of the gesture and, inevitably, bragging rights in the dressing room.
That trademark turned a shared academy in-joke into something more serious on paper, if not in reality. Asked whether there was any tension over who truly “owns” the move, Palmer brushed it off with the ease of a player who has just curled one into the top corner. The message was clear: this is banter, not a battle.
From academy prospects to headline acts
Their paths have zigzagged since those early days at City. While Palmer stayed long enough to break into Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad before making his bold switch to Chelsea in the summer of 2023, Rogers took the scenic route.
Loan spells stacked up for Rogers before he left City permanently for Middlesbrough in 2023, then surged again with Aston Villa, his form in claret and blue convincing Chelsea to break their transfer record to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
Palmer, meanwhile, detonated in west London. Twenty-two Premier League goals. Eleven assists. A debut season that didn’t just justify Chelsea’s investment, it re-centred the club’s entire attacking structure around him. The “cold” celebration became part of that story — a visual stamp on a campaign where he looked utterly unfazed by the weight of expectation.
Now, the pair are back on the same side, this time as established top-flight attackers rather than hopeful academy kids.
World Cup delay, anticipation building
Rogers has yet to join up with his new team-mates on Chelsea’s tour, his arrival delayed by England duty at the 2026 World Cup. The club granted him extra time off after his international exertions, a small pause before he steps into a very different spotlight in west London.
That gap has only cranked up the anticipation. Chelsea supporters have seen what Palmer can do with the keys to the attack. They’ve watched Rogers blossom into a powerful, direct forward capable of hurting teams from multiple positions. The idea of both in the same front line, feeding off each other’s movement and swagger, is an enticing prospect.
And when the first goal finally comes with both on the pitch, the script almost writes itself. Two former City prospects, reunited at Stamford Bridge, wheeling away to the same trademarked pose — one with the legal paperwork, the other with prior authorship, both with something to prove in blue.
