Philippe Coutinho Reunites with Neymar at Santos FC

Philippe Coutinho has reunited with close friend and Brazil team-mate Neymar at Santos FC, signing a deal until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old playmaker had been without a club since leaving Vasco da Gama in February. He had returned to his boyhood side in 2024 and made 81 appearances before walking away, admitting he was "tired mentally".

Now comes another homecoming story, this time at Santos, the club that raised Neymar and is now staging a late-career reunion few expected to see at club level.

Santos announced Coutinho’s arrival with a touch of nostalgia and a clear sense of theatre. The club posted an old photograph of Coutinho and Neymar as teenagers, then paired it with a fresh shot of the pair recreating the same pose in the gym, older, heavier with experience, but visibly delighted.

A video followed: Coutinho stepping into the dressing room, Neymar waiting. The two embrace. Coutinho, visibly emotional, says: "If it's a dream, I don't want to wake up." For the first time, the long-time friends and Brazil colleagues will share a dressing room in club football.

Neymar made his own return to Santos, the club of his youth, in January last year. His comeback lit the fuse. Coutinho’s arrival now adds another layer of star power and memory to a team leaning heavily on its past to shape its present.

Coutinho’s journey to this point has taken in some of Europe’s biggest stages. He came through at Vasco before moving to Inter Milan, then truly exploded at Liverpool after joining in 2013. Across 201 games for the Premier League side, he scored 54 goals and became one of the most feared creative midfielders in Europe.

That form earned him a £142m move to Barcelona in 2018, one of the most expensive transfers in football history. The spell never fully caught fire. He went on to play for Bayern Munich, Aston Villa and Al-Duhail, searching for rhythm and continuity as his career drifted away from its Liverpool peak.

Now, back in Brazil and alongside Neymar at Santos, Coutinho has another shot at writing a meaningful final chapter. The question is no longer where he has been. It is what this reunion can still unlock.
