Coventry City’s Narrow Defeat as a Launchpad for Premier League Success

Bobby Thomas insists Coventry City’s narrow defeat at Manchester City can be the launchpad for their Premier League season, branding the 1-0 loss “a great starting point” for Frank Lampard’s side.

Lampard’s newly promoted team arrived at the Etihad with two defeats from two – beaten at Arsenal on the opening weekend and then at home by Hull City – and left still without a point. But this time, the mood was different.

‘We approached the game differently’

Coventry defended with purpose, frustrated the champions for long spells and carried more structure and belief than in their first two outings.

“We approached the game differently and had a better gameplan,” Thomas told BBC CWR. “We executed it really well and were unfortunate not to come away with a point.”

The shift was tactical as well as mental.

“You can see the formation change yourselves and we were more diligent in the roles everyone took on during the game,” the defender explained. “We approached it a lot better.”

City eventually found the breakthrough to hand Coventry a third straight defeat, but the Sky Blues’ organisation and resilience offered Lampard something concrete to build on.

‘We have to relish it’

Thomas did not hide from the league table. Three games, three defeats, no points. The defender knows that has to change quickly, yet he sees this display as the first real step.

“Three games, zero points is not great but this was a great starting point,” he said. “We can kick on and start getting some points from now.”

The fixture list has been unforgiving. Arsenal away. Manchester City away. A newly promoted side thrown straight into the deep end.

“We’ve had Arsenal and Manchester City away, which has been a challenge, but we have to relish it and really take on these teams,” Thomas said.

There was no talk of damage limitation, no acceptance of being passengers in the division.

“We can’t come to any places and be timid and not give 100%. We have to be all-in on everything we are doing.

“We need to get after it and start getting some points now.”

Coventry have their benchmark. The question now is whether that “starting point” at the Etihad turns into a genuine turning point in their season.
