Cristian Romero Leaves Tottenham for Atletico Madrid
Cristian Romero’s Tottenham exit was never going to be quiet. In the end, it managed to irritate people right up to the final whistle.
On Saturday morning, Spurs finally made it official: Romero, 28, has been sold to Atletico Madrid in a deal worth €40m, with a 15 per cent sell-on clause tucked into the agreement. A clean break on paper. Far less tidy in tone.
Because more than 12 hours before Tottenham pressed send on their announcement, Romero had already gone public.
A farewell on his own terms
Late on Friday night, the Argentine defender posted his goodbye on social media, delivering a long, emotional message that read like the closing chapter of a personal memoir rather than a club statement.
“Today, I say goodbye to a place that, for five seasons, was much more than a club,” he wrote. “It was my home, my challenge and the place where my family and I built such an important part of our lives.
“I leave with a heart full of memories and enormous pride for everything we lived and achieved together.”
He spoke about arriving with a “clear dream” of writing his name into the club’s history and of the work and sacrifice required to “lift a trophy again. And we did it.”
Romero chose to frame his Spurs years through the highs, not the chaos. “The journey wasn’t perfect, but I don’t want that to define my goodbye,” he added, thanking coaches, team-mates, staff and “every person working behind the scenes.”
To the fans, his words were even more personal: “Thank you for loving me, respecting me and making me feel like one of you from day one… I know I wasn’t perfect, but one thing gives me peace: I always gave everything. I defended this shirt with pride and with all my heart.”
He signed off with a flourish: “I’m leaving the club, but a part of my heart will always remain here. Once I was one of you. Today, I leave as one of you forever.”
For many players, that would have been a neatly tied bow on a complicated spell. For Romero, it sparked one last row.
‘It’s Romero’: Sky reporter unimpressed
The timing of that message – before the club had made the transfer official – did not sit well with Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge, who covers Tottenham closely.
Asked on Sky Sports News whether Spurs supporters would miss Romero, Bridge did not hesitate.
“No,” he replied.
“Even announcing the move before the club have announced it, it’s Romero.”
Bridge’s criticism cut to the heart of a long-running frustration around the defender: the sense that his best self was reserved for Argentina, not Tottenham.
“On his day he was one of the best centre-backs in the world,” Bridge said, “but those days came against Ecuador, Peru on international duty.
“There’s nothing wrong with being proud to play for your nation but there was too many times it was a chore playing for Spurs.”
Romero’s relationship with the club hierarchy also came under scrutiny. “He posted a few public comments about the board, which you can’t do,” Bridge pointed out.
The reporter did acknowledge Romero’s role in success, describing him as “a key part of winning the Europa League,” but quickly returned to the off-field drama, referencing “that final day saga about whether will he or won’t he watch his team try to avoid relegation.”
For Bridge, the conclusion was clear: “The time was right for him to move.”
Spurs move on without a replacement
Tottenham, for their part, seem to agree that this is a natural break point. With Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi already through the door earlier in the summer, the club are not expected to chase another centre-back in the final two weeks of the window.
The defensive reshuffle is effectively done. Attention now turns higher up the pitch.
Spurs are working on a major overhaul of their forward line, with deals for Cody Gakpo and Savinho on the agenda as they try to reshape the attack for the next phase of the project.
Romero’s story in north London is over. The question now is whether Tottenham’s new spine can be stronger without him than it ever managed to be with him.
