Cristian Romero edges closer to the exit door at Tottenham, with Atletico Madrid now in pole position to land the defender after a summer of uncertainty around his future.
The Argentine has been linked with a move away from north London for months, Arsenal among the clubs credited with interest at one stage. That trail has cooled. The noise now comes from Spain. Transfer reporter Matteo Moretto claims Atletico are closing in on an agreement with Spurs, with only minor details left to iron out between the clubs.
If Romero goes, he will not be the only defender heading for a new life on the continent.
Spence tops Inter list as Dumfries replacement
In Italy, Djed Spence has surged to the top of Inter Milan’s agenda. Corriere reports that the full-back is Cristian Chivu’s No. 1 target to replace Denzel Dumfries, who has joined Real Madrid.
Personal terms are said to be agreed and Spurs and Inter are understood to be close to a deal worth around £25million. For a player who has never truly settled at Tottenham, it would be a significant reset and a useful fee for a club juggling both incomings and outgoings.
That juggling act is about to get trickier.
Homegrown rules tighten Spurs’ options
Tottenham’s attempts to reshape Roberto De Zerbi’s squad are running into the hard edge of Premier League registration rules.
Clubs can name up to 25 senior players, but only 17 of those can be non-homegrown. The rest must be homegrown. As things stand, Spurs are close to their limit, which means any move for another foreign senior player risks blocking someone else’s place.
Right now, Tottenham can only sign a player aged 21 or under without complication, unless they sell. If they want to bring in more experience from abroad, they will have to clear space first. That reality hangs over every negotiation.
Bergvall’s future still in the balance
Lucas Bergvall sits right on that fault line between planning and opportunity.
The 20-year-old has featured regularly in pre-season under De Zerbi, and those minutes have not gone unnoticed in his camp. There is an appreciation that the new head coach has backed up his praise with game time this summer.
Yet the midfielder had already told Spurs earlier in the window that he wanted a fresh challenge to push his development. Last season, he grew frustrated by a lack of training time, never mind match minutes, in his preferred number eight role. Pre-season has softened that frustration, not erased it. His future remains open, one of several unresolved threads in Tottenham’s window.
Osimhen door shuts, Gakpo out of reach
Up front, one potential blockbuster option has slipped away.
Reports earlier this week suggested Spurs had the chance to move for Victor Osimhen this summer. That prospect has since been firmly played down. Soccernet.ng reports that the Nigerian striker will stay put beyond this window.
Osimhen is under contract with Galatasaray until June 2029 with no release clause, and the Super Lig champions are believed to be planning to hand him the No. 9 shirt as they build their attack around the 27-year-old. Tottenham, for now, are watching that project from afar.
Cody Gakpo is another name that has featured heavily on De Zerbi’s attacking wishlist, but that pursuit is also stuck.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke told the Transfer Insider podcast for Football Insider that Liverpool have no plans to sell Gakpo “as things stand right now,” despite Tottenham’s interest. He stressed that any movement would depend on Liverpool’s own business and squad depth, with Andoni Iraola unwilling to weaken his options.
The message is clear: unless Spurs come up with a huge offer of at least £70m and Liverpool bring in more players, Gakpo stays at Anfield. With Liverpool’s squad already described as “a bit short”, the door looks close to bolted.
De Zerbi’s wishlist vs reality
Against that backdrop, Tottenham push on. Manchester City’s Savinho remains a key target, with Liverpool’s Gakpo and City attacker Omar Marmoush also believed to be of interest to De Zerbi as he looks to sharpen his forward line.
At the same time, established names such as Romero, Spence and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario are all being linked with moves away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The window still has time to twist. Tottenham want more signings. The manager has a clear idea of what he wants his team to look like. The question now is simple: can Spurs bend the market, and those unforgiving squad rules, enough to give him the tools to do it?
