Curtis Jones Joins Inter Milan: A New Era for English Players
Curtis Jones has walked away from a lifetime at Liverpool to become the latest Englishman in Inter Milan’s striking summer shift.
The 25-year-old midfielder has signed with the Italian champions until 2031, completing a €35 million move from Anfield, according to Italian reports. He follows Djed Spence and John Stones through the doors at San Siro, making it three England internationals in Nerazzurri colours in a matter of weeks.
For a club that had fielded only three English players in its 118-year history before this year, the change is dramatic. Now there are six.
From Anfield dream to San Siro stage
Jones leaves as a pure product of Liverpool’s academy, a local talent who climbed every rung. Sixteen years in red, gone in a single post.
“After 16 years, it's time to say goodbye,” he wrote on Instagram, confirming the move. “I came here as a kid with a dream of playing for Liverpool and I've been lucky enough to actually live that dream. Liverpool will be a massive part of me.”
Inter, announcing their new signing, leaned into the sense of a life being uprooted.
“After a lifetime with Liverpool, the midfielder leaves his home country for the first time, joining fellow England internationals John Stones and Djed Spence and becoming the sixth Englishman in Inter's history,” the club said. “The time has come for a new, incredible adventure — one he can approach with the confidence that has accompanied him throughout his life.”
The deal ties Jones to Inter until 2031, the same length of contract handed to right-back Spence. Stones, arriving as a free agent after his Manchester City contract expired, has also committed to a deal running to 2031.
Inter’s new English core
This is not a token nod to the Premier League market. It is a clear tilt in strategy.
Spence, the attacking right-back. Stones, the experienced centre-back. Jones, the versatile midfielder. Three different profiles, one shared passport, all dropped into a side that has just conquered Serie A and wants to stay there.
Inter begin their title defence against Monza on Saturday, with the squad suddenly carrying a distinctly English thread through its spine.
A club that once barely glanced towards England now leans on it. The question is no longer whether English players fit at Inter. It’s how far this new core can take the champions of Italy.
