Dan Burn Named Permanent Captain of Newcastle United: A Special Moment
Dan Burn’s journey from the St James’ Park stands to the armband is complete. Newcastle’s towering defender has been named club captain on a permanent basis, a role left vacant since Bruno Guimaraes’ departure earlier in the summer.
New Head Coach Matthias Jaissle confirmed the decision on Saturday, ending any doubt over who would lead his side into a new era.
"It's an absolute honour to be named captain of Newcastle United," Burn said after the announcement. "It's always an immense privilege to represent this football club, especially when I have been trusted with the armband on previous occasions, but to lead the team on a permanent basis is going to be really special."
For Burn, it is not just another line on the CV. A boyhood Magpies supporter, he grew up dreaming of this. Since signing in 2021, he has made 193 appearances for the club and become one of the dressing room’s most influential figures.
"It's been an incredible journey since I joined the club four-and-a-half years ago – we've achieved some amazing things together and enjoyed some unforgettable moments," he said. "I believe there's still more to come and I'm relishing the responsibility of pushing everybody every single day to make sure that is the case."
Jaissle has wasted no time stamping his authority on the squad, and his choice of captain says plenty about the standards he wants.
"Dan is a natural leader and a perfect fit for the role of Newcastle United captain," the German coach said. "He puts the interests of the team ahead of his own every time he steps onto the pitch and always gives maximum commitment in everything he does.
"Off the pitch, he leads by example in how he conducts himself. Not many people understand what this club means to the city better than Dan and that experience will be vital in helping guide our younger players through this period of change and adaptation."
A local lad, nearly 200 games in black and white, now the permanent captain in a time of transition. The armband is his. What he does with it will help define Newcastle’s next chapter.
