Roberto De Zerbi Imposes Phone Ban to Boost Tottenham Unity Amid Winless Streak
Roberto De Zerbi, the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, has enforced a strict no-phone rule during team meals at their training camp in Marbella. This move aims to strengthen squad cohesion after a disappointing start to the Premier League season, where Spurs remain winless and sit bottom of the table.
Measures to Build Team Spirit
With Tottenham struggling through six matches without a victory despite spending £380 million on ten new signings, De Zerbi sought to bring the group closer off the field. The phone ban applies during all communal meals so players interact more directly rather than being distracted by devices.
He explained the reasoning behind this decision: "We worked on the pitch, we stayed together - we removed phones from breakfast, lunch and dinner to stay together because now it is like [phone] all the time." The Italian coach also held several important meetings during the trip, focusing on football, the team’s situation, and individual responsibilities.
De Zerbi mentioned this approach had been successful in previous training camps with Marseille. He discussed the plan with club officials including Vinai Venkatesham, Johan Lange, and the owner before implementing it. The goal was to create uninterrupted time together since preseason was disrupted by many new arrivals and players returning from the World Cup.
Despite the strict rules during meals, players were free to explore the city outside of sessions. "Yes, with freedom," De Zerbi said. "With no military rules. I love freedom."
Richarlison Situation Remains Tense
The unity push contrasts sharply with the ongoing issue surrounding forward Richarlison. The Brazilian striker was left out of Tottenham’s Premier League squad and relegated to the Under-21 team after failed transfer attempts over the summer.
Former Everton boss Duncan Ferguson voiced concern over Richarlison’s treatment, suggesting the player deserved support rather than exclusion. Richarlison responded publicly, agreeing with Ferguson’s remarks.
De Zerbi, however, distanced himself from the saga, saying, "It’s not my problem anymore. You have to ask Vinai or Johan."
Upcoming Challenge Against Coventry
Tottenham now face a critical match hosting Coventry City on Monday night. De Zerbi’s team must turn the team-building efforts into a positive result to avoid deepening scrutiny on their costly rebuild.
Failing to secure three points will increase pressure on the club’s management as they seek stability amid a rough season start.
