De Zerbi's Optimism for Spurs' Transfer Success with Savinho
Roberto De Zerbi insists Tottenham’s transfer business is far from over as the club closes in on an £85 million move for City winger Savinho – but he is in no mood to let the hype run away from the football.
Speaking on the eve of Spurs’ 2026-27 Premier League opener away to Brentford, the Italian cut an upbeat but guarded figure when the conversation turned to Savinho and any further signings.
He knows what is coming. He just refuses to say it out loud.
“It’s not right to speak about the players until they are official,” De Zerbi told the media. “Just to say, I’m very happy. We have not finished yet in the transfer market.”
Spurs have already spent aggressively this summer and Savinho, if and when he arrives, would be the headline act in a major recruitment drive. The Brazilian is expected to become the latest high-profile addition to a squad being reshaped in De Zerbi’s image.
The coach, though, kept the focus on what he already has rather than who might be walking through the door next.
He spoke with clear satisfaction about the work done at Hotspur Way in recent weeks, not just in terms of talent but temperament.
“It’s an important part, I think, because so far we have had a great summer of signings – great players, great behaviour, great spirit, great personality.”
That word – personality – cropped up more than once. De Zerbi knows Spurs fans are excited by the scale of the £85m move for Savinho and the club’s wider spending spree. He also knows the Premier League has a long history of expensive squads that never learned how to win.
So he drew a sharp line between transfer buzz and actual points.
“You know better than me in the Premier League, you don’t win the game with the names, with the big players,” he said. “There are a lot of examples in the last years in the Premier League.”
The message was blunt: the market is only the start.
“We have to deserve to win the game and to deserve to win the game, we have to reach a high level in character, in passion, in value and in the style of play as well.”
The chequebook has done its part. De Zerbi now wants to see if this rebuilt squad can match the price tags with personality once the whistle blows at Brentford.
