De Zerbi Draws on Pochettino's Spurs Bonding Move Amid Premier League Struggles
Roberto De Zerbi, managing Tottenham during a tough Premier League run, has decided to take his squad to Spain for a bonding trip. This move echoes a similar decision made by Mauricio Pochettino in 2019.
Despite spending heavily in the summer transfer window, Tottenham still search for their first league win this season. Their recent match against Manchester United showed promise as they earned a point even after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off, leaving them with ten men.
The team’s form remains inconsistent, leaving De Zerbi frustrated and searching for solutions. To build better chemistry, he organized a trip abroad during the season, which is quite unusual. Typically, teams travel for bonding during preseason or international breaks, not just after one ends.
The Purpose of the Trip
De Zerbi explained the reasoning behind the excursion: "To work together, to stay together, to go for dinner together, to know each other better, because to be a team you have to know your teammates and be together." This suggests he believes that stronger personal connections will improve their collective performance.
A Historical Parallel
This approach recalls Pochettino's strategy when he took the Spurs squad away ahead of the Champions League final. That bonding experience helped forge unity at a critical moment.
Summer Signings and Challenges
Tottenham signed over ten players during the summer, many highly talented, but integrating so many new faces takes time. The squad needs to gel both on and off the pitch, and this trip aims to accelerate that process.
It might be the boost Tottenham requires to turn their season around. Their next test comes as they host Coventry in the Premier League on Monday night.
