Declan Rice Isolated as England Prepares for Norway Clash
Declan Rice has been separated from the rest of the England squad after falling ill on the eve of their World Cup quarter-final against Norway, with FA staff moving quickly to prevent a wider outbreak in camp.
The Arsenal midfielder, who dragged himself through last season despite hamstring and lower back problems, has now been hit by a bug at the worst possible time. He has missed two consecutive training sessions, a significant disruption for a player who has become one of England’s on‑field reference points.
Medical staff have acted decisively, keeping Rice away from the main group as England tighten their preparations for Saturday’s tie. The aim is clear: protect the squad, protect the quarter-final. Those inside the camp are said to be confident the illness has been contained, but his availability for the Norway game remains in doubt.
For Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, it is another reminder of the physical toll on their midfield lynchpin. Rice played through the pain barrier at the Emirates Stadium last term, anchoring a side that leaned heavily on his durability and presence. Now he faces a late start to club pre-season, not only because of England’s World Cup run but also as he manages his ongoing fitness issues.
Rice is due to report back late after his international duties, part of a three-week break granted to World Cup participants once their countries are eliminated. Arsenal’s summer officially begins in Girona on August 1, but their first sessions will be missing a sizeable chunk of their core.
Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke are all expected to be absent alongside Rice, with the England contingent not involved in the opening pre-season fixture. If Gareth Southgate’s side progress to the semi-finals, that delay stretches further. The quartet will almost certainly miss Arsenal’s second pre-season game as well, against Real Betis in Dublin on August 5.
The disruption is not confined to England’s representatives. Martin Odegaard is tied up with Norway, William Saliba with France, David Raya, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino with Spain, and Leandro Trossard with Belgium. All are set to be unavailable when Arteta gathers his players for the first sessions of the summer.
France have already secured their place in the last four with a 2-0 win over Morocco, locking Saliba into a longer international stay. Spain and Belgium collide tonight for a semi-final spot, a match that will dictate when Raya, Zubimendi, Merino and Trossard can even think about club duty again.
For now, though, England’s immediate concern sits in a room away from the main group. Rice, isolated, fighting off a bug while his teammates fine-tune for Norway.
If he recovers in time, he walks straight back into the heart of England’s midfield. If he doesn’t, both country and club are reminded how fragile even their most reliable pillar can be.
