Derby County’s Young Guns Triumph Over Mansfield in Pre-Season Match
Derby County’s next generation stepped out of the shadows and into the spotlight, as a youthful side delivered a sharp 3-1 pre-season victory over Mansfield Town.
With many senior players reserved for duty at Burton Albion tomorrow, this was a night for fringe first-teamers and academy prospects to make a case. They did more than that. They won the game.
Derby struck first. Lars-Jorgen Salvesen pulled wide, glanced up and whipped in a superb cross from the flank. Dajaune Brown timed his run perfectly and met it with conviction, steering home to give John Eustace’s patched-together XI an early advantage.
Mansfield, though, refused to play the supporting role. There was enough experience and quality in their ranks to trouble Derby, and they found a way back. Released down the right, Michael Smith — once on Derby’s radar — cut inside, shifted the ball onto his left and bent a precise finish beyond the reach of Josh Vickers. The Derby goalkeeper flung himself full length, but Smith’s effort nestled past his outstretched hand.
That equaliser sparked the visitors. David McGoldrick, so familiar to Derby supporters, began to probe between the lines, and Vickers had to be at full stretch again, producing a terrific save to deny the forward before the interval. The game, which had started as a gentle workout, now had an edge.
Second Half Opens Up
After the break, the contest loosened and chances came in flurries. Smith almost turned it on its head for Mansfield, rattling the crossbar from a corner with Vickers beaten. It was a warning that Derby’s young defence could not switch off.
Derby responded by driving from midfield. Owen Eames surged through the centre, breaking lines with a powerful run that opened Mansfield up. He slipped in Salvesen, who this time could only fire straight at goalkeeper Lewis. It felt like the game was tilting one way, then the other, with both sides sensing there was more in it.
The pressure finally told in Derby’s favour.
Charlie Smith, quiet in the first half, found space 20 yards out and took responsibility. One touch to set himself, then a crisp, low strike arrowed into the bottom corner. Lewis saw it late and could do nothing. It was a composed finish from a young player stepping into a senior rhythm.
Now the game stretched. McGoldrick tried to drag Mansfield back into it with another effort from distance, only for Vickers to plunge low and turn his drive away. Each save underlined the goalkeeper’s sharpness and kept Derby’s slender lead intact.
Derby Smell Blood
You could feel more goals coming, and Derby were the ones who seized the moment. Corey Blackett-Taylor, lively and direct, worked a promising opening down the flank, driving at his marker and unsettling the Mansfield back line. His persistence paid off as the ball broke kindly, and Cruz Allen read it quicker than anyone.
Allen stayed calm, opened up his body and guided his finish past Harris to make it 3-1, giving Derby the daylight their second-half display deserved.
A pre-season friendly on paper, yes. But for Derby’s youngsters and fringe players, this was something else: a platform, a statement, and a reminder that places are there to be claimed as the real campaign looms.
