Fernando Diniz's Frustration Over Memphis Depay's Contract Situation

Fernando Diniz cut a frustrated figure as he tried to explain how a partnership he had been quietly building his future around at Corinthians vanished before it even began.

The coach had been counting on Memphis Depay. Not just for a few eye-catching cameos, but as a pillar of a two-year project.

“I was really looking forward to working with Memphis; I think we could have made a very interesting duo, and it was something I really wanted,” Diniz admitted. “Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be this time.”

He made it clear this was not about one matchday or one tactical plan. In his mind, Depay was central to a longer vision.

“It's something that goes far beyond today's game, a two-year stay, a foundation that I believed would bear a lot of fruit,” he said, conceding his sadness at losing the forward while insisting it did not directly affect the game itself. “I won't say it affected the match - I don't even know if Memphis would have been fit to play.”

While Diniz spoke of regret and what might have been, the club hierarchy chose the language of balance sheets and sustainability.

In an official statement, Corinthians confirmed they had pulled the plug on renewing Depay’s deal, framing it as a necessary sacrifice to protect the institution’s finances.

“Sport Club Corinthians Paulista has decided not to renew the contract of athlete Memphis Depay. This decision was taken solely and exclusively in consideration of the financial health of our institution, which demands rigorous balance and responsibility in the management of available resources,” the club declared.

They stressed their appreciation for the Dutchman’s conduct during talks.

“We would like to express our deep gratitude to player Memphis Depay and his entire team, who from the start of negotiations sought the best possible agreement,” the note continued.

The board also tried to explain the protracted nature of the saga, pointing to the calibre of the player rather than any internal dithering.

“We understand that the process extended beyond the traditional deadline, but this is mainly due to the fact that we are dealing with a distinguished athlete. The Board also recognises and values the tireless efforts of all the institution’s departments that worked to make the athlete’s stay feasible.”

If the club tried to close the matter with corporate politeness, Depay ripped it back open with a blistering post on X.

“Very disappointed to read that Corinthians decided not to honour our agreement in place to extend my contract for 2 more years,” he wrote, accusing decision-makers of walking away from a deal he believed was already sealed.

“This renewal was explicitly agreed upon by the president as well as the sporting, legal and financial department. Some people decided however to breach this engagement.”

Depay insisted he had behaved correctly throughout negotiations and suggested this dispute will not quietly fade away.

“I didn't want this situation and always respected the club throughout the process, but now I am forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests,” he warned. “In the upcoming days I will speak publicly but rest assured that I will not leave this unacceptable behaviour unsanctioned.”

While the legal and political fallout looms, Diniz has a dressing room to manage. A dressing room that has just lost a key figure from a golden spell that brought three major trophies, including the Copa do Brasil.

“I think everyone felt it, everyone in the football department, because Memphis spent two years here. Beyond the trophies, he built relationships with everyone,” the coach said.

The squad had travelled expecting Depay to be with them. That assumption only deepened the shock.

“Everyone was expecting and certain that he would make the trip. So there was frustration,” Diniz admitted.

The response, he stressed, had to be collective. If the club had lost a star, the team could not afford to lose its edge.

“At the same time that things happen beyond our control, we had to unite even more to put in the performance we did,” he said, praising the way his players channelled the disappointment.

“The players were extraordinary, as they have been with me in the vast majority of matches - showing dedication and sacrifice. They managed to turn a sad event into motivation to give an even bigger effort and secure a good result here.”

A coach mourning a lost partnership, a club talking about financial health, and a star accusing the board of breaking their word. For Corinthians, this is no simple contract story. It is a fault line that could shape trust, ambition and the next two years of the project Diniz thought he was building with Memphis Depay at its heart.
