Djed Spence is moving closer to the exit at Tottenham this summer, with Inter Milan lining up a move for the England full-back.
The Serie A giants are preparing an offer in the region of £25.6million and, crucially, Spence is ready to listen. Fresh from an eye-catching World Cup, his stock has never been higher, and he wants that form to mean something more than a pat on the back and a place on the bench.
World Cup bounce, club reality
Spence’s performances in Qatar, capped by his display in England’s semi-final defeat to Argentina, pushed him into a different bracket of recognition. Those weeks changed the conversation around him. Now he wants his club situation to match the reputation he has built on the international stage.
At Spurs, that pathway is blocked. Roberto De Zerbi cannot promise the 26-year-old the minutes he craves and has made it clear he will not stand in Spence’s way if he chooses to move on. The Italian coach rates him, but admiration only goes so far when a player is staring at his prime years and sees someone else’s name on the teamsheet.
That someone is Pedro Porro. A World Cup winner, a new long-term contract signed in June, and firmly first-choice at right-back. Spence sits behind the Spaniard in the pecking order, and while he can fill in at left-back, he sees himself as a right-back and believes his World Cup form has earned him the right to fight for that role week in, week out.
A deal that suits everyone
In a perfect scenario, Spurs would not be cashing in on a player who, only a month ago, was being widely praised on the biggest stage. But the reality is harsher. Spence wants regular football. Tottenham want to be sharper and more decisive in the market, especially when it comes to selling.
Inter Milan’s interest lands at the right time. The Italians view Spence as the direct replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who has joined Real Madrid, and the move allows Spurs to avoid strengthening a direct Premier League rival after only fielding tentative enquiries from Liverpool.
The proposed £25.6m fee feels on the low side given Spence’s current profile. His World Cup surge and age would, on paper, suggest a higher number. Yet the market has not erupted around him. Without a queue of bidders, Spurs know they cannot dictate a premium price for a player who has struggled to deliver consistently at the very top level during his time in north London.
Spurs’ shifting transfer stance
Whether Tottenham move for a replacement remains unclear. De Zerbi has already signalled that the club are not done in this window, but there is no firm indication yet of a like-for-like signing at right-back.
What is clear is the broader message. Letting Spence go, at a realistic price rather than an inflated one, continues to highlight a shift in Spurs’ approach to trading. The club have acknowledged that in previous years they have failed to secure fair market value when moving players on.
