Djed Spence Set for Inter Milan Move
Djed Spence’s future is edging away from north London – and not in Arsenal’s direction.
The Tottenham full-back, long tipped for a move away this summer, is now closing in on a switch to Inter Milan, with the Italian giants deep in talks over a permanent deal.
An early suggestion that Liverpool could be tempted drew a sharp valuation from one observer, who insisted: “If it’d be Liverpool then I’d want big money for him. I would want a lot of money for him. They took the boy Joe Gomez, who was a South London boy, but Spence is a better player than him.”
That sort of comparison underlines how highly Spence is rated in some quarters. But the Premier League door that’s ajar right now is not at Anfield – and certainly not at Arsenal.
Inter step on the gas
Arsenal have not moved for a right-back or a wide defender all summer, and there is no sign of that stance changing. While his name has been floated as a surprise option, any switch across north London would be exactly that: a shock.
Inter, by contrast, have made their move. The Serie A club have opened club-to-club talks with Spurs and, crucially, Spence is understood to want the move to San Siro. That desire is helping to shape the negotiations.
Earlier in the window, the two clubs stood apart on valuation. Tottenham were holding out for a higher fee, while Inter were reluctant to meet the asking price. The gap is now narrowing.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter are closing in on an agreement worth around €30million (£25m) plus bonuses. That figure sits below the number long associated with Spurs’ demands, but the player’s clear preference for Inter appears to be softening Tottenham’s stance.
Arsenal angle fades
Could Arsenal hijack the deal late? Right now, it looks a distant prospect.
With no real push from the Emirates to recruit in that area and Inter already deep into talks, any move for Spence from elsewhere would require a dramatic shift in circumstances – both financially and in terms of the player’s wishes.
For the moment, the road seems to run in one direction. Unless something changes fast, Spence’s next step will not be a short hop across north London, but a leap to Milan and a fresh start in Serie A.
